Designed for a wide range of plants and everyday gardening applications, it provides a practical choice for seed sowing, seedlings, potting, cuttings and hanging baskets.

Mother Earth is Clover's value-focused multi-purpose compost, offering gardeners a versatile growing medium without the need to buy a specialist compost for every routine planting job. Its formulation combines the essential nutrition required for plant growth with wetting agents that assist water distribution through the growing medium.

The 60 litre bag provides a useful volume for seasonal planting, potting and propagation while remaining convenient for garden centre retail. Creation Horticulture supplies 75 x 60L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Mother Earth Multi Purpose Compost?

Economical multi-purpose compost - Clover's value-focused option for everyday growing and gardening.
Contains essential nutrients - formulated with the nutrition required to support plant establishment and growth.
Contains wetting agents - helps water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium.
Suitable for a wide range of plants - a versatile choice where a specialist growing medium is not required.
Suitable for seeds and seedlings - useful for raising many common flower and vegetable plants.
Ideal for general potting - suitable for moving established plants into fresh containers.
Suitable for hanging baskets - useful for seasonal flowering displays.
Can be used for cuttings - another useful application for this versatile growing medium.
60L bag - a practical size for home gardeners, garden centres and regular seasonal planting.

What can Clover Mother Earth Compost be used for?

Mother Earth is designed as a general-purpose growing medium, making it suitable for numerous common gardening jobs throughout the season.

Seed sowing
Raising seedlings
Potting and potting-on
Rooting suitable cuttings
Hanging baskets
Pots and planters
Seasonal bedding plants
Suitable flowers and vegetables
General container gardening

Plants with specialist pH, drainage or nutritional requirements may perform better in a dedicated growing medium. Clover produces specialist composts for these applications, while Mother Earth is intended as a versatile everyday option.

Suitable for seeds & seedlings

Clover Mother Earth can be used for sowing many common flower and vegetable seeds. Fill the tray or pot with compost, gently level the surface and sow according to the requirements of the individual variety.

Water carefully after sowing to avoid disturbing small seeds. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into suitable pots and continued in fresh Mother Earth compost where appropriate.

Germination requirements differ between plant species, so temperature, moisture, light and sowing depth should always be matched to the seed being grown.

Everyday potting & container growing

Mother Earth is a practical choice for general potting and potting-on. When moving a plant into a larger container, choose a pot with appropriate drainage and sufficient room for the developing root system.

Add fresh compost around the existing root ball, gently firm it into place and water after planting. Avoid heavily compressing the growing medium, as healthy roots require an appropriate balance of moisture and air.

For plants remaining in containers for extended periods, monitor both watering and nutritional requirements as the season progresses.

Hanging baskets & seasonal displays

Clover Mother Earth is also suitable for hanging baskets, providing an economical growing medium for seasonal flowering displays.

Baskets have a relatively small growing-media volume compared with garden beds and can dry rapidly during warm or windy weather. Check moisture regularly and adjust watering to the size of the basket, weather conditions and the plants being grown.

As vigorous flowering plants mature, supplementary feeding may be required to maintain growth and flowering throughout the season.

Using Mother Earth for plant cuttings

Mother Earth can also be used for suitable plant cuttings. Fill a pot or propagation tray with the compost, prepare the cutting correctly for the plant species and insert it carefully into the growing medium.

Maintaining appropriate moisture and humidity can help reduce water loss while new roots develop. Once a cutting has established a suitable root system, it can be moved into an appropriately sized pot.

Wetting agents for easier water management

Clover confirms that Mother Earth contains wetting agents. These help water penetrate the compost and distribute through the growing medium rather than simply running away from a dry surface.

Watering frequency should still be determined by the plant, container size and growing conditions. Smaller pots and hanging baskets can require considerably more frequent watering than larger containers.

Avoid leaving plants permanently saturated. Good irrigation should maintain adequate moisture while allowing the root zone to retain sufficient air.

Essential nutrients for plant growth

Mother Earth contains the essential nutrients required to support plant growth during establishment.

Plants kept in the same container for longer periods will eventually use the available nutrient supply. For longer-term container growing, supplementary liquid feeding can be introduced as required using a fertiliser appropriate for the plants being grown.

Always follow the instructions supplied with the chosen plant feed rather than increasing concentration in an attempt to accelerate growth.

Mother Earth vs Clover Multi Purpose Compost

Mother Earth and Clover's standard Multi Purpose Compost are both versatile growing media, but they occupy slightly different positions within the Clover range.

Mother Earth is Clover's budget multi-purpose compost, formulated with essential nutrients and wetting agents and suitable for a wide range of plants. It is a strong choice where customers want a dependable, economical compost for routine gardening.

Clover's standard Multi Purpose Compost is positioned as its higher-quality general-purpose formulation. Customers with specialist plants can then move further into Clover's dedicated compost range, including ericaceous and crop-specific growing media.

Enriched with essential nutrients and a wetting agent, it provides a versatile growing environment for a wide range of ornamental and edible plants.

Designed as a genuine all-round compost, Clover Multi Purpose can be used across numerous everyday gardening jobs rather than requiring a different growing medium for every application. From raising young plants and potting on to filling patio containers and seasonal hanging baskets, it provides the versatility needed by both gardeners and horticultural retailers.

The formulation combines a consistent growing medium with added nutrients and a wetting agent to assist water distribution. This helps create suitable conditions around developing roots while making routine watering easier.

The large 75 litre bag is particularly useful for customers filling multiple pots, baskets and containers, while full trade pallets contain 51 x 75L bags.

Why choose Clover Multi Purpose Compost?

Versatile multi-purpose growing medium - suitable for a broad range of everyday gardening applications.
Suitable for seed sowing - can be used when starting a wide range of suitable plants from seed.
Ideal for potting and potting-on - useful throughout different stages of plant establishment.
Excellent for containers - a practical choice for patio pots, planters and seasonal displays.
Suitable for hanging baskets - one compost can be used across baskets and container planting.

Consistent quality - manufactured by Clover, a specialist producer of retail and professional growing media.
Large 75L bag - well suited to customers with several containers or larger seasonal planting projects.

What can Clover Multi Purpose Compost be used for?

The strength of a multi-purpose compost is its versatility. Clover's formulation is designed to cover many of the most common gardening and container-growing applications with a single growing medium.

Seed sowing
Potting seedlings and young plants
Potting-on established plants
Patio pots and planters
Hanging baskets
Seasonal container displays
Suitable vegetables and herbs grown in containers
General garden container planting

Specialist plants with unusual pH, drainage or nutritional requirements may perform better in a dedicated growing medium. For most general planting jobs, however, Clover Multi Purpose provides a convenient all-round option.

Ideal for pots, planters & hanging baskets

Container plants depend entirely on the growing medium inside the pot for their root environment, making the quality and consistency of the compost particularly important.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains a wetting agent to help with water management and is formulated to provide a suitable general-purpose medium for container planting.

When filling containers, add the compost without excessively compacting it. Position the plant at the appropriate depth, gently firm the growing medium around the root ball and water thoroughly after planting.

Always use containers with suitable drainage and adjust watering according to plant size, weather conditions and the volume of growing medium available.

Using Clover Multi Purpose Compost for seed sowing

Clover specifically lists seed sowing among the applications for its Multi Purpose Compost, allowing gardeners to use the same growing medium for starting suitable seeds and subsequently potting-on young plants.

Fill seed trays, modules or pots without heavily compressing the compost, sow at the depth appropriate to the seed variety and water carefully to avoid disturbing freshly sown seed.

Germination requirements vary significantly between species, so temperature, moisture, light and sowing depth should always be matched to the particular plant being raised.

Watering plants in Clover Multi Purpose Compost

The formulation includes a wetting agent designed to make watering easier, helping water move into the growing medium rather than simply running away from a dry surface.

This does not mean every plant should be watered on the same schedule. Check the growing medium and the requirements of the plant before watering. Small containers and hanging baskets can dry significantly faster than larger pots, particularly during warm or windy weather.

Avoid permanently saturating the compost. Good watering practice aims to provide sufficient moisture while maintaining an appropriate root environment for the plant being grown.

Nutrient-enriched for healthy plant establishment

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains an essential nutrient package as part of its formulation, providing nutrition to support plants during establishment.

Plants kept in containers for longer periods may eventually require supplementary feeding as the original nutrient supply is used. The timing will depend on the plant, container size, watering frequency and length of the growing period.

When additional nutrition is required, choose a fertiliser appropriate for the plant and follow the feed manufacturer's application instructions.

Pure Harvest Coco Coir Brick 5kg – Peat-Free Growing Media, Makes 75L

Pure Harvest Coco Coir Brick 5kg – Peat-Free Growing Media, Makes 75L

£7.75

Please sign in to see pricing

Peat-free 5kg coco coir brick that expands to approximately 75 litres of light, versatile growing media.

Pure Harvest Coco Brick is a compressed growing medium made from 100% natural, organic coir pith. Compact and easy to store before use, each 5kg brick expands to approximately 75 litres when hydrated, making it a practical alternative to storing and handling bulky bags of loose growing media.

Naturally peat-free and nutrient-free, Pure Harvest coco provides an adaptable base for growers who want greater control over their growing media and feeding programme. Its open structure provides a useful balance between moisture retention, drainage and aeration, while the expanded coco can be used on its own or blended with other growing media components.

Why choose Pure Harvest Coco Brick?

Makes approximately 75 litres – one compact 5kg brick produces a substantial volume of growing media once fully hydrated.
100% natural organic coir pith – produced from coconut coir to create a versatile growing substrate.
Peat-free growing media – a practical choice for growers looking to reduce or avoid the use of peat.
Good moisture and drainage balance – the open structure of coco helps retain moisture while allowing excess water to drain.
Supports root-zone aeration – the light, open texture helps maintain air space around developing roots.
Nutrient-free growing medium – gives growers control over the nutrients and fertilisers added during cultivation.
Easy to customise – can be used with compost and fertiliser blends or mixed with materials such as perlite and clay balls.
Compact for storage and transport – 75 litres of growing media is supplied as a compressed 5kg brick until it is needed.

What is Pure Harvest Coco Brick suitable for?

Pure Harvest Coco Brick is suitable for a broad range of growing applications, including indoor growing, pots, containers, balcony growing and other situations where a lightweight coco coir growing medium is required.

Because the coco is nutrient-free, growers can tailor their feeding programme to suit the crop being grown. It can also be incorporated into custom growing media mixes alongside perlite, clay balls, compost or fertiliser blends, making it useful for both straightforward potting and more tailored growing systems.

How to use Pure Harvest Coco Brick

Place the 5kg compressed brick in a suitably sized container or preparation area and add approximately 18 – 20 litres of water. Allow the coir to absorb the water and expand before breaking apart and thoroughly loosening the material.

Once fully expanded, a single brick produces approximately 75 litres of coco growing media. The hydrated coco can then be used as required or combined with other growing media components to create a mix suited to your plants and growing system.

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure 40L - Natural Organic Fertiliser & Soil Improver

£2.88

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure 40L is a completely natural and organic garden fertiliser and soil improver, ideal for enriching garden soil with organic matter while supporting healthy plant growth. Suitable for planting, mulching and soil conditioning, it is a versatile choice for flowers, fruit, vegetables, roses, trees and shrubs.

Farmyard manure has long been used to improve cultivated soils by adding valuable organic matter. As it becomes incorporated into the soil, it contributes humus and nutrients while helping improve the physical condition of the root zone.

Clover's ready-to-use blended farmyard manure provides gardeners with a convenient bagged soil improver that can be used across beds, borders, vegetable plots, allotments and other cultivated areas.

Supplied in a 40 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 40L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Blended Farmyard Manure?

Natural organic garden fertiliser - adds organic matter and naturally occurring nutrients to cultivated soil.
Effective soil improver - useful for improving the condition and structure of garden soils.
Source of organic matter and humus - helps build and maintain productive garden soil.
Suitable for planting - can be incorporated into soil when preparing beds, borders and planting areas.
Useful as a mulch - can be applied around established plants as part of routine garden maintenance.
Ideal for fruit and vegetables - useful when preparing vegetable plots and productive growing areas.
Suitable for ornamental planting - use around flowers, roses, trees and shrubs where appropriate.
Versatile garden application - suitable for domestic gardens, allotments and larger growing areas.

Improve soil with organic matter

Organic matter plays an important role in maintaining healthy garden soil. Regular incorporation of suitable organic material can improve soil structure and create better conditions for root development.

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure provides a convenient source of organic matter and humus that can be incorporated into cultivated ground during soil preparation.

In lighter soils, additional organic matter can help improve moisture and nutrient retention. In heavier soils, it can contribute towards a more workable structure when incorporated as part of a wider soil-improvement programme.

Soil improvement is gradual rather than instant. Regular additions of organic matter over successive growing seasons can help maintain productive, workable garden soil.

Where can Clover Farmyard Manure be used?

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure is suitable for a broad range of garden and allotment applications, including:

Vegetable plots
Allotments
Flower beds and borders
Fruit-growing areas
Rose beds
Tree and shrub planting areas
General soil improvement
Mulching around established plants
Preparing ground before planting

The requirements of individual plants should always be considered. Some plants prefer relatively low-fertility conditions or have specialist soil requirements, so manure does not need to be added indiscriminately to every part of the garden.

Farmyard manure for vegetable gardens & allotments

Vegetable plots and allotments can benefit considerably from regular additions of organic matter, particularly where crops are grown intensively year after year.

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure can be incorporated into suitable beds as part of soil preparation, helping replenish organic matter and improve the condition of cultivated ground.

It is particularly useful when preparing areas for crops that benefit from rich, moisture-retentive soil. Crop requirements vary, however, so the timing and quantity of manure used should be appropriate for the plants being grown.

Using farmyard manure when planting

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure can be used as part of ground preparation before establishing flowers, fruit, vegetables, roses, trees and shrubs.

When preparing a bed or border, incorporate the manure into the existing soil rather than treating it as a replacement for soil or potting compost. This adds organic material throughout the cultivated layer and helps improve the overall root environment.

When planting individual trees and shrubs, manure can be used as part of wider soil preparation, but avoid placing concentrated manure directly against sensitive roots or stems.

Using Clover Farmyard Manure as a mulch

Farmyard manure can also be used as an organic surface mulch around suitable established plants.

Applied over the soil surface, organic material helps protect the ground and gradually becomes incorporated into the upper soil layers through natural biological activity and cultivation.

When mulching around trees, shrubs and other established plants, leave a clear space immediately around stems, crowns and tree trunks rather than piling organic material directly against them.

Farmyard manure vs compost

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure and Clover Multi Purpose Compost perform different jobs in the garden.

Farmyard manure is primarily a fertiliser and soil improver. It is intended to add organic matter and nutrients to existing garden soil and can also be used for suitable mulching applications.

Multi-purpose compost is a growing medium designed for applications such as pots, containers, potting-on and seed sowing.

Clover Farmyard Manure should therefore not be treated as a direct substitute for potting compost when filling containers.

Farmyard manure vs soil conditioner

Both products can improve garden soil, but they have slightly different roles.

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure combines its soil-improving properties with its role as a natural organic garden fertiliser, making it particularly useful where both organic matter and fertility are required.

A dedicated soil conditioner is more specifically focused on adding organic fibre and humus to improve soil structure and moisture management.

About Clover

Clover produces growing media, soil improvers and related products for professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Its retail range includes multi-purpose and specialist composts alongside products designed specifically for improving existing garden soil.

Blended Farmyard Manure provides a traditional approach to soil improvement in a convenient bagged format, making it suitable for gardeners, allotment growers and professional users who want to introduce organic matter into cultivated ground.

Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 40L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal volume of 3,200 litres per pallet.

Clover Blended Farmyard Manure 40L FAQs

What is Clover Blended Farmyard Manure?

It is a completely natural and organic garden fertiliser and soil improver supplied in a convenient 40L bag.

Is farmyard manure the same as multi-purpose compost?

No. Farmyard manure is primarily used to improve and enrich existing soil. Multi-purpose compost is a growing medium intended for jobs such as potting and container growing.

Can I use Clover Farmyard Manure in a vegetable garden?

Yes. It is suitable for vegetable plots and allotments and can be incorporated into suitable beds as part of soil preparation.

Is Clover Farmyard Manure suitable for roses?

Yes. Clover identifies farmyard manure as suitable for flowers, fruit and vegetables as well as roses, trees and shrubs.

Can farmyard manure improve clay soil?

Adding organic matter can help improve the structure and workability of heavy soils over time. For best results, soil improvement should be viewed as an ongoing process rather than a one-off treatment.

Yes. It can be used for suitable mulching applications around established plants. Keep the material away from direct contact with stems, crowns and tree trunks.

Can I fill pots with farmyard manure?

Clover Multi Purpose Compost 60L - Nutrient Enriched Peat-Based Growing Medium

£6.04

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Multi Purpose Compost 60L is a consistent, high-quality peat-based growing medium with a nutrient-enriched formulation and added wetting agent. Designed for seed sowing, potting, containers and hanging baskets, it provides a versatile all-round compost for gardeners, nurseries and professional horticultural users.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost combines a quality peat-based growing medium with plant nutrients and a wetting agent to help make routine watering easier. Its broad range of applications means the same compost can be used from early propagation through to potting-on and established container planting.

The 60 litre bag provides a practical balance between volume and handling, making it suitable for customers who need plenty of growing medium without moving the larger 75L format.

Creation Horticulture supplies the 60L size in trade quantities of 75 bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Multi Purpose Compost?

Consistent multi-purpose compost - suitable for a wide variety of everyday growing applications.
Nutrient-enriched formulation - contains plant nutrients to support establishment and healthy growth.
Added wetting agent - helps water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium more effectively.
Suitable for seed sowing - Clover specifically recommends Multi Purpose Compost for raising suitable plants from seed.
Ideal for potting and potting-on - useful as plants progress from seedlings into larger containers.
Suitable for pots and containers - a versatile choice for patio and garden container planting.
Excellent for hanging baskets - the nutrient and wetting-agent formulation makes it suitable for seasonal basket planting.
Versatile 60L format - substantial enough for multiple planting jobs while remaining manageable to handle.
Professional and domestic use - suitable for garden centres, nurseries, landscapers and home gardeners.

What can Clover Multi Purpose Compost 60L be used for?

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to cover many of the most common propagation, potting and container-growing jobs with a single growing medium.

Seed sowing
Raising suitable seedlings
Potting-on young plants
General potting
Patio containers and planters
Hanging baskets
Seasonal bedding displays
Suitable herbs and vegetables grown in containers
General garden planting applications

Plants with specialist pH, drainage or nutritional requirements may benefit from a dedicated growing medium. Clover produces specialist composts for these applications, including ericaceous formulations for acid-loving plants.

Seed sowing & young plant propagation

Clover identifies seed sowing as one of the core applications for its Multi Purpose Compost. For larger seed trays and conventional propagation, it provides a convenient growing medium that can continue to be used as seedlings develop.

When sowing, fill the tray or pot and lightly level the surface without heavily compressing the compost. Sow according to the requirements of the plant and water carefully to avoid disturbing the seed.

For very small seed cells or particularly fine seed, the compost can be sieved where a finer particle size is required.

Potting & potting-on with Clover Multi Purpose

The same compost can be used as young plants move into larger pots, helping simplify growing-media requirements through different stages of production or garden planting.

When potting-on, choose a suitably sized container and place enough fresh Clover Multi Purpose Compost in the base to position the existing root ball at the correct height. Fill around the root ball, gently firm the compost and water after planting.

Avoid excessive compaction. Maintaining an appropriate balance between moisture and air around the root system is important for healthy plant establishment.

Ideal for pots, containers & hanging baskets

Container plants rely entirely on the growing medium within the pot for their root environment. Clover Multi Purpose Compost provides a versatile option for seasonal patio displays, planters and hanging baskets.

Its added wetting agent assists water absorption, which is particularly useful in containers where growing media can dry more rapidly during warm weather.

Always ensure containers have suitable drainage and adjust watering according to the plant, container volume and weather conditions. Hanging baskets and smaller pots normally require closer moisture monitoring than larger containers.

Added wetting agent for easier watering

A wetting agent is incorporated into Clover Multi Purpose Compost to help water move into the growing medium more effectively. This can be particularly helpful when the surface has started to dry and would otherwise become more difficult to rewet evenly.

The wetting agent does not remove the need for careful irrigation. Check plants regularly and water according to their individual requirements rather than following a fixed schedule.

Avoid both prolonged saturation and excessive drying. Good watering practice should maintain sufficient moisture while allowing an appropriate root environment for the plant being grown.

Nutrient-enriched for plant establishment

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains a nutrient-enriched formulation to support plants as they establish in the growing medium.

Clover's published guidance recommends beginning supplementary liquid feeding after approximately four weeks for plants being maintained in pots and hanging baskets for longer periods.

Feeding requirements vary between plants, so choose an appropriate fertiliser and follow the feed manufacturer's instructions. Vigorous, flowering and heavy-cropping plants may have different nutritional requirements from slower-growing ornamental species.

About Clover

Clover is an established specialist manufacturer of growing media for the retail gardening and professional horticultural markets. Its product range covers general-purpose composts alongside specialist growing media designed for particular crops and applications.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is one of the core products within that range, providing a versatile growing medium that can be used across propagation, potting and container planting rather than being limited to one specific crop.

What can Clover Multi Purpose Compost be used for?

As the name suggests, Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to cover many everyday gardening tasks. Typical applications include:

Seed sowing
Raising seedlings and young plants
Potting and potting-on
Seasonal bedding plants
Patio pots and containers
Window boxes and planters
Hanging baskets
Suitable flowers and vegetables
General container gardening

Plants with specialist requirements may perform better in a dedicated growing medium. Acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, for example, are better matched with an ericaceous compost.

Seed sowing & raising young plants

Clover Multi Purpose Compost can be used for sowing many common flower and vegetable seeds. Fill clean trays, modules or pots with fresh compost, gently level the surface and sow according to the requirements of the individual variety.

Water carefully after sowing so that small seeds are not displaced. Once seedlings are sufficiently established to handle, they can be transplanted or potted-on into suitable containers.

Germination requirements vary between plant species, so sowing depth, temperature, light and moisture should always be adjusted to suit the particular seed being grown.

Potting & potting-on plants

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is a convenient option when young plants have outgrown their original pots or established plants need moving into larger containers.

Choose a clean container with adequate drainage and enough additional space for root development. Add fresh compost, position the plant at the appropriate depth and carefully fill around the root ball.

Gently firm the compost without heavily compacting it, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.

Built-in wetting agent for effective moisture management

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains a wetting agent to help water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium.

This helps achieve more consistent wetting throughout the root zone, particularly when the surface of the compost has begun to dry between watering.

The wetting agent does not replace good irrigation practice. Watering frequency should be adjusted according to the plant, container size, weather and stage of growth, and containers should have suitable drainage to prevent prolonged waterlogging.

Nutrient enriched for plant establishment

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains essential plant nutrients to support healthy establishment and early development.

Plants gradually use the nutrients contained within their compost as they grow. Container plants kept in the same growing medium for an extended period may therefore require supplementary feeding later in the growing cycle.

The timing and type of additional feed should be matched to the individual plant and its stage of growth.

Ideal for pots, planters & hanging baskets

The versatility of Clover Multi Purpose Compost makes it particularly useful for seasonal container gardening. It can be used in patio pots, planters, window boxes and hanging baskets containing many popular ornamental plants.

Containers can dry considerably faster than open garden soil, particularly during warm, sunny or windy weather. Check moisture levels regularly and water according to plant demand rather than following a fixed timetable.

Gardeners creating particularly demanding summer basket displays may also consider Clover's specialist Tub & Basket Compost, which is formulated specifically around the requirements of container-grown ornamental plants.

When should I choose a specialist compost?

Multi-purpose compost is designed to be versatile, but some plants and applications have more specific requirements.

Clover offers specialist composts for applications including acid-loving plants, roses, trees and shrubs, as well as dedicated tub and basket growing. Choosing a specialist formulation can be worthwhile when the requirements of the plant or application differ significantly from general container growing.

Clover Bark Chips 60L - 10-30mm Decorative Bark Mulch for Beds, Borders & Pathways

£7.62

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Bark Chips 60L are high-quality, screened 10-30mm bark chips designed for decorative mulching across beds, borders and pathways. Applied as a surface layer, the bark creates an attractive natural finish while helping suppress weed growth, conserve soil moisture and insulate the soil around established plants.

Bark mulch combines practical garden benefits with an immediate visual improvement. The natural chips provide a clean finishing layer around shrubs, trees and ornamental planting while covering exposed soil and helping reduce the amount of light reaching germinating weeds.

Clover Bark Chips are screened to a 10-30mm grade, providing a practical decorative particle size for general landscaping and garden applications.

Supplied in 60 litre bags, the product is suitable for home gardens, garden centres, landscapers and larger planting projects. Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 60L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Bark Chips?

10-30mm screened bark - a useful decorative grade for general garden and landscaping applications.
Natural decorative finish - instantly improves the appearance of exposed soil in planted areas.
Helps suppress weeds - a sufficient surface layer reduces light reaching the soil and emerging weed seedlings.
Helps conserve soil moisture - covering the soil surface can reduce moisture loss during dry conditions.
Insulates the soil surface - provides an additional protective layer around established planting.
Ideal for beds and borders - provides a neat finish around shrubs, trees and ornamental plants.
Suitable for pathways - useful for creating informal natural-looking paths and landscaped areas.
Large 60L bag - suitable for both individual garden projects and larger landscaping requirements.

Where can Clover Bark Chips be used?

Clover Bark Chips can be used wherever a natural bark surface is appropriate. Common applications include:

Flower beds and ornamental borders
Around established shrubs
Around established trees
Landscape planting schemes
Informal garden pathways
Decorative areas around containers and planters
General garden mulching

The natural appearance works particularly well in planted areas where gravel or other mineral aggregates would produce a harder visual finish.

Bark mulch for weed suppression

One of the principal reasons for applying bark chips is to help manage weeds in established planting areas.

A continuous bark layer reduces the amount of light reaching the soil surface, making conditions less favourable for many weed seedlings. Existing perennial weeds should be removed before the bark is applied, as established roots can continue growing through a new mulch layer.

Bark mulch will not eliminate every weed permanently. Wind-blown seeds can eventually germinate within the surface material, but these are often easier to identify and remove from a maintained mulched area.

Helping soil retain moisture

Exposed soil loses water directly from its surface. Applying bark as a mulch creates a physical covering between the soil and the surrounding air, helping reduce evaporation.

This can be particularly useful around established shrubs, trees and perennial planting during warm and dry conditions.

Bark mulch does not remove the need to water plants. Instead, it can help the soil retain available moisture for longer between watering and rainfall.

How to apply Clover Bark Chips

Prepare the area before applying the bark. Remove established weeds and unwanted vegetation, level the soil where necessary and water plants if the ground is particularly dry.

Spread the bark evenly across the soil surface to create a continuous mulch layer. For effective weed suppression, avoid leaving thin patches where exposed soil remains visible.

When mulching around trees and shrubs, leave a small clear area immediately around stems and trunks rather than piling bark directly against living plant tissue.

Bark is a natural material and will gradually weather and break down outdoors. Existing areas can therefore be topped up when the mulch layer becomes thin or when the appearance needs refreshing.

How much area does a 60L bag of bark cover?

Coverage depends entirely on the depth at which the bark is applied. One 60L bag contains 0.06 cubic metres of material.

As a simple example, a 60L bag spread at a nominal depth of 50mm has a theoretical coverage of approximately 1.2m².

Actual coverage can vary because bark is an irregular natural material and the finished depth will not be perfectly uniform. Allow additional material for uneven ground and areas requiring a deeper mulch layer.

A natural decorative landscaping finish

Bark chips provide a softer, more natural appearance than stone or gravel, making them particularly suited to planted borders and informal garden designs.

As a natural timber product, individual pieces will vary in shape, texture and colour. Fresh bark will also change appearance as it is exposed to sunlight, rain and normal outdoor weathering.

These variations are a normal characteristic of natural bark rather than a product defect.

About Clover

Clover supplies a broad range of growing media and garden products for retail and professional horticultural use. Alongside its multi-purpose and specialist composts, products such as Bark Chips provide gardeners and landscapers with materials for maintaining and finishing planted areas.

The 10-30mm screened grade gives Clover Bark Chips a versatile role across domestic gardens, garden centre projects and general landscape maintenance.

At a nominal depth of 50mm, a 60L bag has a theoretical coverage of approximately 1.2m². Actual coverage varies with ground conditions and the finished depth of the bark.

Can Clover Bark Chips be used around trees and shrubs?

Yes. They can be used as a decorative mulch around established trees and shrubs. Avoid piling bark directly against trunks and stems.

Can these bark chips be used for garden paths?

Yes. Clover Bark Chips are suitable for informal pathways and other decorative landscaped areas where a natural bark surface is desired.

Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost 40L - Peat-Free Compost with 6 Month Slow Release Feed

£8.40

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost 40L is a high-quality 100% peat-free growing medium made from organic matter blended with woodfibre and coir, with added perlite and 6 months slow release feed. Developed as a versatile alternative to traditional peat-based compost, it is suitable for a wide range of everyday gardening and container-growing applications.

Clover has developed this peat-free formulation to provide the physical structure, moisture management and nutrition required by a broad range of plants without using peat. The blend combines several complementary growing-media ingredients rather than relying on a single peat substitute.

Woodfibre and coir contribute to the structure of the growing medium, while added perlite helps maintain air space within the root zone. Clover also incorporates 6 months slow release feed to provide sustained plant nutrition throughout an extended growing period.

Supplied in a 40 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost?

100% peat free - a versatile growing medium formulated without peat.
Organic matter base - forms an important part of Clover's peat-free growing-media blend.
Blended with woodfibre - contributes to the physical structure of the compost.
Contains coir - another key component of Clover's balanced peat-free formulation.
Added perlite - helps maintain an open, aerated root environment.
6 months slow release feed - provides sustained nutrition for plants over an extended growing period.
Multi-purpose formulation - designed as a versatile compost for a wide range of everyday growing applications.
40L retail bag - practical for pots, containers and seasonal garden projects.

What's in Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost?

Clover's current Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost is made using a carefully blended combination of organic matter, woodfibre, coir and perlite.

Using several different materials allows each component to contribute different physical properties to the growing medium. This is particularly important in peat-free compost, where maintaining a suitable balance between moisture retention, drainage and air availability is essential for healthy root development.

The inclusion of perlite helps create additional air-filled pore space within the compost, while the fibrous components contribute to the overall structure of the mix.

6 months slow release feed

A major feature of Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost is its 6 months slow release feed.

Rather than relying solely on a short initial nutrient charge, the incorporated slow release fertiliser is designed to provide plant nutrition progressively over an extended period.

This makes the compost particularly convenient for container plants and seasonal displays that will remain in the same growing medium for several months.

The stated feeding period should not be treated as a guarantee that every plant will require identical nutrition for exactly six months. Nutrient demand varies considerably according to plant species, container size, growing conditions and rate of growth.

What can Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost be used for?

As a multi-purpose growing medium, this compost is suitable for a broad range of everyday garden and container-growing applications, including:

Potting and potting-on
Patio pots and containers
Window boxes
Planters
Seasonal bedding plants
Flowering container plants
Suitable vegetables and edible plants
General garden and container growing

Plants with specialist pH or growing-medium requirements should be matched with an appropriate specialist compost. Clover also produces dedicated peat-free formulations for applications including ericaceous plants, tubs and baskets and John Innes-style growing.

Watering peat-free compost

Peat-free growing media can behave differently from traditional peat-based compost, so it is worth checking the compost itself rather than automatically following an established watering routine.

Check moisture within the root zone before watering and apply enough water to wet the growing medium thoroughly without leaving containers permanently saturated. Always use pots and planters with appropriate drainage.

Water demand will increase as plants become larger and can change rapidly during warm, sunny or windy conditions. Hanging and exposed containers generally require particularly close attention during summer.

Using Clover Peat Free Compost for potting

When potting or potting-on, choose a clean container with suitable drainage and enough room for continued root development.

Add fresh Clover Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost, position the plant at an appropriate depth and carefully fill around the root ball. Gently firm the compost to remove large air pockets without heavily compacting the growing medium.

Water thoroughly after potting and allow excess water to drain. Continue to monitor moisture as the plant establishes, adjusting irrigation to suit the crop, container and growing conditions.

Why is perlite added to the compost?

Perlite is deliberately included in Clover's peat-free formulation. The lightweight material helps create pore space within the compost, supporting air availability around developing roots.

This is particularly valuable in container growing, where the entire root system is restricted to a relatively small volume of growing medium.

The small white particles visible throughout the compost are therefore a normal and beneficial part of the formulation.

Peat-free vs traditional peat-based multi-purpose compost

The key difference is the material used to create the growing medium. Traditional Clover Multi Purpose Compost is peat based, whereas this product is completely peat free.

Clover's peat-free formulation instead combines organic matter with woodfibre, coir and perlite. The aim is to provide the root-zone structure and growing conditions required by plants using a blend that does not contain peat.

Gardeners accustomed to peat-based compost may notice differences in texture and watering behaviour. Checking moisture regularly and responding to the condition of the growing medium is preferable to watering purely by habit.

About Clover's peat-free range

Clover manufactures growing media for both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market and has developed a dedicated range of peat-free retail composts.

Alongside this Multi-Purpose Compost, the current peat-free range includes specialist formulations for John Innes-style growing, tubs and baskets, ericaceous plants and other applications, allowing gardeners to choose a peat-free growing medium suited to the plants they are growing.

40L peat-free compost for garden centres & professional users

The 40L format provides a practical retail pack for customers moving to peat-free growing media while remaining convenient for regular garden and container-growing projects.

Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal growing-media volume of 4,000 litres per pallet.

Clover packaging update

Clover is currently rolling out updated branded packaging across selected products. During this transition, customers may receive the previous packaging design, the newer design, or a mixture of both when ordering multiple bags.

Packaging appearance may therefore vary from the product imagery shown.

Clover John Innes No.3 Compost 25L - Loam-Based Compost for Mature Plants, Shrubs & Tomatoes

£2.93

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover John Innes No.3 Compost 25L is a traditional loam-based compost formulated for the final potting of established and mature plants. Designed for plants with greater nutritional demands, it provides a substantial growing medium for tomatoes, chrysanthemums, shrubs, tubs, baskets and a wide range of established fruit, vegetable and ornamental plants.

John Innes No.3 represents the most nutrient-rich stage of the traditional numbered John Innes potting compost system. It is intended for established plants that have progressed beyond the earlier propagation and potting-on stages and require a growing medium suited to continued development in larger containers.

The loam-based formulation gives the compost useful weight, structure and stability, making it particularly well suited to mature container plants, shrubs and vigorous crops that may remain in the same pot for an extended period.

Supplied in a 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover John Innes No.3 Compost?

Traditional John Innes No.3 formulation - a proven loam-based growing medium for established plants.
Designed for final potting - particularly suited to mature plants moving into their longer-term containers.
Higher nutrient formulation - designed for established plants with greater nutritional requirements.
Loam-based structure - provides body, weight and stability within larger pots and containers.
Ideal for tomatoes - Clover specifically recommends No.3 for mature tomato plants.
Suitable for shrubs - a strong choice for established woody plants grown in containers.
Suitable for tubs and baskets - provides a substantial growing medium for mature seasonal planting.
Ideal for established ornamentals - suitable for chrysanthemums and a wide range of mature flowering plants.
25L bag - convenient for repotting individual mature plants and larger containers.

What is John Innes No.3 Compost used for?

Clover John Innes No.3 is specifically formulated for the final potting-on stage of mature plants. Clover identifies the compost as suitable for:

Tomatoes
Chrysanthemums
Shrubs
Tubs and larger containers
Baskets
Established fruit plants
Mature vegetable plants
Established ornamental plants

Its stronger formulation makes it particularly useful once plants have moved beyond seedling and young-plant stages and require more substantial nutrition and root support.

What does John Innes No.3 mean?

John Innes is not a brand name. It refers to a traditional system of loam-based compost formulations designed around different stages of plant development.

Within the numbered John Innes potting range, the nutrient level increases as the number rises. This allows growers to select a formulation that better matches the maturity and nutritional requirements of the plant.

John Innes No.3 is intended for established and mature plants and is traditionally used for final potting, where plants may remain in the same container for considerably longer than they would during propagation or early potting-on.

John Innes No.1, No.2 & No.3 - what's the difference?

The numbered John Innes composts are designed for progressively more established plants.

John Innes No.1	Designed for sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and bedding plants.
John Innes No.2	Designed for potting-on established bedding and vegetable plants as their nutritional requirements increase.
John Innes No.3	Designed for final potting of mature plants, including tomatoes, chrysanthemums, tubs, baskets and shrubs.

Choosing the appropriate stage helps match the growing medium to the plant rather than using the strongest formulation unnecessarily for very young plants.

Ideal for mature container plants

Mature plants grown in containers need more than simply a space for their roots. The growing medium must provide physical support, retain appropriate moisture and nutrients and remain sufficiently stable as the plant develops.

The loam content of John Innes No.3 gives it considerably more body than many lightweight potting media. This additional weight can also be useful when growing larger or top-heavy plants in pots, helping provide a more substantial base around the root system.

It is particularly useful for plants that are reaching their final container size and will not be repeatedly potted-on during the same growing cycle.

John Innes No.3 for tomatoes

Tomatoes are specifically listed by Clover as a suitable crop for John Innes No.3. Once established, tomato plants develop substantial root systems and become increasingly demanding as flowering and fruit production progress.

No.3 provides a substantial loam-based medium for established tomato plants grown in suitable containers. As with any container-grown tomato crop, watering and nutrition should continue to be monitored throughout the season.

Mature fruiting plants can eventually require supplementary feeding as the nutrients available within a finite volume of compost are used.

John Innes No.3 for shrubs & long-term containers

Established shrubs can remain in containers for several seasons, making the physical properties of the growing medium particularly important.

A loam-based compost provides useful weight and structure around established root systems, making John Innes No.3 a popular choice for suitable mature shrubs and other long-term container specimens.

When repotting, choose a container with suitable drainage and avoid moving a plant into a dramatically oversized pot. A modest increase in container size generally makes moisture management easier while providing fresh rooting space.

How to use Clover John Innes No.3 Compost

Choose a clean container with adequate drainage and sufficient space for the plant's established root system. Add fresh compost to the base before carefully removing the plant from its previous pot.

Position the plant at approximately the same planting depth at which it was previously growing. Fill around the root ball with Clover John Innes No.3, gently firming the compost to remove large air pockets without heavily compacting the growing medium.

Water thoroughly after potting and allow excess water to drain. Continue to monitor moisture according to plant requirements, container size, weather and growing conditions.

What about acid-loving plants?

Standard John Innes No.3 should not automatically be used for plants that specifically require acidic growing conditions.

Rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and other lime-hating plants have specialist pH requirements. For these plants, choose an appropriate ericaceous growing medium rather than assuming a standard mature-plant compost is suitable.

About Clover John Innes composts

Clover produces a range of traditional John Innes growing media for different stages of plant development. The range progresses from specialist seed compost through No.1 and No.2 to the stronger No.3 formulation for final potting.

This staged approach allows gardeners and professional growers to select a loam-based compost appropriate to the maturity of the plant and its changing nutritional requirements.

25L John Innes No.3 for garden centres & professional growers

The 25L format is convenient for mature container plants, shrubs and final potting applications while remaining manageable for retail customers and professional users.

Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal growing-media volume of 2,000 litres per pallet.

It is a traditional loam-based compost designed for the final potting of established and mature plants, including tomatoes, chrysanthemums, tubs, baskets and shrubs.

Is John Innes No.3 suitable for mature plants?

Yes. No.3 is specifically intended for established plants at the final potting stage and provides a stronger formulation than the earlier numbered John Innes composts.

Can I grow tomatoes in John Innes No.3?

Yes. Tomatoes are specifically identified by Clover as a suitable crop for its John Innes No.3 Compost.

What is the difference between John Innes No.2 and No.3?

No.2 is intended for potting-on bedding and vegetable plants, while No.3 is the stronger formulation intended for final potting and more mature plants.

Is John Innes No.3 suitable for shrubs in containers?

Yes. Shrubs are one of Clover's specified applications for No.3, and its loam-based composition makes it particularly useful for established container plants.

Can I use John Innes No.3 for seedlings?

It is not the appropriate Clover John Innes formulation for seed sowing. Clover produces John Innes Seed Compost for seeds and No.1 for sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and bedding plants.

Can I use John Innes No.3 for rhododendrons and azaleas?

Plants with specialist acidic growing requirements should be grown in an appropriate ericaceous medium rather than standard John Innes No.3 unless the individual plant's requirements indicate otherwise.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the product image?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging, so either current packaging design may be supplied during the changeover.

How many Clover John Innes No.3 25L bags are supplied per pallet?

A full Creation Horticulture pallet contains 80 x 25L bags, providing a total nominal volume of 2,000 litres.

Clover Ericaceous Compost 75L - Acid-Loving Plant Compost for Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Camellias

£3.75

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Ericaceous Compost 75L is a specialist peat-based growing medium formulated for acid-loving and lime-sensitive plants. Its acidic formulation provides the conditions required by popular ericaceous plants including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and blueberries.

Acid-loving plants can struggle when grown in ordinary garden soils or general-purpose composts with an unsuitable pH. Clover Ericaceous Compost provides a dedicated growing medium designed around their requirements, helping create an appropriate root environment for healthy establishment and continued growth.

The formulation includes essential nutrients, trace elements and a wetting agent, combining plant nutrition with improved water distribution through the growing medium.

Supplied in a generous 75 litre bag, it is suitable for planting acid-loving species in pots, planters and other appropriate growing situations. Creation Horticulture supplies 60 x 75L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Ericaceous Compost?

Added wetting agent - assists even water distribution through the growing medium.
Large 75L format - useful for larger containers, multiple plants and seasonal planting projects.
Specialist Clover growing media - produced by a manufacturer supplying both retail gardening and professional horticulture.

Which plants need ericaceous compost?

Ericaceous compost is designed for plants that prefer acidic growing conditions and are often described as acid-loving, lime-hating or calcifuge plants.

Popular plants that can benefit from a suitable ericaceous growing medium include:

Rhododendrons
Azaleas
Camellias
Heathers
Blueberries
Magnolias that prefer acidic conditions
Other suitable lime-sensitive ornamental and fruiting plants

Not every plant requires acidic compost. For general planting, a multi-purpose or crop-specific growing medium may be more appropriate, so it is worth checking the requirements of the species before planting.

Why do acid-loving plants need specialist compost?

Soil and compost pH influences the availability of nutrients around plant roots. Ericaceous plants are adapted to acidic conditions and can struggle when the root environment becomes too alkaline.

One of the most recognisable symptoms is yellowing between the veins of younger leaves. This can occur when an unsuitable root-zone pH restricts the plant's ability to access important nutrients, even when those nutrients are physically present in the growing medium.

Using a dedicated ericaceous compost from the outset provides a more appropriate environment for these plants than relying on a standard general-purpose growing medium.

Growing ericaceous plants in containers

Container growing is particularly useful for acid-loving plants where the natural garden soil is unsuitable. Instead of trying to alter an entire garden bed, a container allows the root environment to be managed using an appropriate specialist compost.

Choose a container large enough for the plant's developing root system and make sure it has adequate drainage. Fill with Clover Ericaceous Compost, position the plant at the correct depth and gently firm the growing medium around the root ball before watering thoroughly.

As permanent container plants mature, they may eventually need repotting into a larger container or refreshing with suitable ericaceous growing medium.

Watering acid-loving plants

Clover Ericaceous Compost contains a wetting agent to help distribute moisture through the growing medium, but watering frequency should always be adjusted to the plant, container size and prevailing weather conditions.

Avoid allowing container-grown plants to remain permanently waterlogged, but do not repeatedly allow sensitive plants to dry out completely either.

In hard-water areas, repeated watering with alkaline tap water can gradually influence conditions within a container. Where practical, collected rainwater is often a useful choice for established acid-loving plants.

Feeding rhododendrons, azaleas & other ericaceous plants

Clover Ericaceous Compost contains essential nutrients and trace elements as part of its formulation, helping plants establish after planting.

Plants remaining in containers for extended periods may eventually require supplementary feeding as the original nutrient supply is used. When additional nutrition is required, select a fertiliser specifically suitable for acid-loving or ericaceous plants and follow the fertiliser manufacturer's instructions.

Maintaining an appropriate root environment is just as important as supplying fertiliser, which is why using the correct compost and suitable irrigation water can make a significant difference to long-term plant performance.

About Clover

Clover is a specialist manufacturer of growing media supplying both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Its range includes everyday retail composts alongside specialist substrates formulated for particular crops and commercial growing applications.

Specialist products such as Clover Ericaceous Compost demonstrate the importance of matching the growing medium to the plant rather than treating every crop in the same way. By providing a formulation intended for lime-sensitive species, gardeners can create appropriate growing conditions even where their natural garden soil is unsuitable.

The wider Clover range covers general-purpose growing media, specialist plant composts and professional horticultural substrates for nurseries and commercial growers.

75L ericaceous compost for garden centres & nurseries

Ericaceous compost is an important specialist line for garden centres because it naturally complements the sale of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers, blueberries and other acid-loving plants.

The large 75L format provides customers with enough growing medium for substantial containers or several smaller planting projects, while Creation Horticulture supplies 60 bags per full pallet.

A full pallet therefore represents a total nominal growing media volume of 4,500 litres.

Clover Ericaceous Compost 75L FAQs

What is ericaceous compost?

Ericaceous compost is a specialist acidic growing medium intended for lime-sensitive plants that prefer lower-pH growing conditions.

Which plants can I grow in Clover Ericaceous Compost?

It is suitable for acid-loving plants including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and blueberries, as well as other species with similar growing requirements.

Can I use ordinary multi-purpose compost for rhododendrons and azaleas?

A dedicated ericaceous compost is the better choice where a plant specifically requires acidic conditions. Standard multi-purpose compost may not provide the root-zone conditions preferred by lime-sensitive species.

Can Clover Ericaceous Compost be used for blueberries?

Yes. Blueberries prefer acidic growing conditions and are well suited to cultivation in an appropriate ericaceous growing medium.

Can I grow acid-loving plants in pots if my garden soil is alkaline?

Yes. Container growing is a practical solution because the plant can be grown in specialist ericaceous compost without relying on the pH of the surrounding garden soil.

Should I use rainwater for ericaceous plants?

Rainwater can be particularly useful in hard-water areas because repeated use of alkaline tap water may gradually influence the growing conditions within a container.

Why are the leaves on my acid-loving plant turning yellow?

Yellowing between the veins of younger leaves can be associated with nutrient availability problems caused by unsuitable root-zone conditions. Several factors can cause yellowing, however, so watering, nutrition and general plant health should also be checked.

Does Clover Ericaceous Compost contain nutrients?

Yes. The formulation contains essential nutrients and trace elements as well as a wetting agent to assist water distribution.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the photograph?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging. Either current packaging design may therefore be supplied during the changeover, while the compost formulation remains the same.

How many 75L bags are supplied on a pallet?

A full Creation Horticulture pallet contains 60 x 75L bags, providing a total nominal growing media volume of 4,500 litres.

Clover Tub & Basket Compost 40L - Moisture-Retaining Compost for Hanging Baskets & Containers

£4.91

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Tub & Basket Compost 40L is a specialist growing medium formulated for hanging baskets, tubs, pots and ornamental container displays. Enriched with essential plant nutrients and moisture-retaining granules, it is designed to support vigorous growth and help maintain more consistent moisture around developing roots.

Hanging baskets and containers can be demanding environments for plants. Their limited compost volume means they can dry rapidly during warm or windy weather, while vigorous flowering plants can quickly use the available nutrients.

Clover Tub & Basket Compost is formulated specifically for these conditions. Its nutrient package supports plant development, while Moisture Store granules help retain water within the growing medium, making it particularly useful for colourful seasonal displays.

Supplied in a convenient 40 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Tub & Basket Compost?

Specialist tub and basket compost - formulated specifically for ornamental plants grown in containers.
Contains essential plant nutrients - provides nutrition to support establishment and healthy plant development.
Moisture Store granules - help retain water within the growing medium for improved moisture management.
Ideal for hanging baskets - particularly useful where a relatively small compost volume supports vigorous seasonal growth.
Excellent for tubs and patio containers - provides a dedicated growing medium for ornamental displays.
Helps manage hot-weather watering - moisture-retaining ingredients help reduce the speed at which the growing medium dries.
Suitable for flowering displays - ideal for creating colourful seasonal tubs, baskets and planters.
Convenient 40L bag - a practical size for home gardeners and garden centre retail.

What can Clover Tub & Basket Compost be used for?

This compost is specifically designed around container growing and seasonal ornamental planting. Typical applications include:

Plants with specialist pH, drainage or nutritional requirements should be matched with an appropriate specialist growing medium.

Moisture Store granules for improved water retention

A key feature of Clover Tub & Basket Compost is the inclusion of Moisture Store granules. These help the growing medium retain water and make moisture available within the root zone between watering.

This is particularly valuable in hanging baskets. Unlike plants growing in open ground, basket plants have access only to the relatively small volume of compost surrounding their roots. Once mature, a heavily planted basket can therefore use water surprisingly quickly.

Tubs, window boxes and patio planters face similar challenges, especially when positioned in warm, sunny or exposed locations.

Moisture-retaining granules do not remove the need for regular watering, but they help create more consistent root-zone conditions and reduce the speed at which containers dry out.

Essential nutrients for vigorous plant growth

Clover Tub & Basket Compost is enriched with the essential nutrients required to support healthy plant establishment and development.

This is important in containers because plants are unable to extend their roots into surrounding garden soil in search of additional nutrition. Everything required for growth must be supplied within the restricted root environment.

As plants become larger and flowering intensifies, nutrient demand can increase substantially. Long-season and particularly vigorous displays may therefore require supplementary feeding as the season progresses.

Choose a fertiliser appropriate for the plants being grown and always follow the feed manufacturer's recommended application instructions.

How to use Clover Tub & Basket Compost

Fill the basket, tub or planter with fresh compost, leaving sufficient space for the root balls of the plants being installed. Position plants at the appropriate depth and carefully fill around their roots.

Gently firm the compost to remove large air gaps without heavily compressing the growing medium. Water thoroughly after planting and allow excess water to drain.

For hanging baskets, make sure the basket is securely supported before watering. A freshly watered basket can be considerably heavier than one containing dry compost.

As the display develops, check moisture levels regularly rather than relying on a fixed watering timetable. Plant size, weather, basket volume and location can all significantly affect water demand.

Designed for demanding summer containers

Seasonal flowering plants can produce an impressive amount of foliage and flowers from a relatively small container. This rapid growth also means that both water and nutrients are consumed quickly.

A specialist tub and basket compost is designed with these demands in mind. Clover combines plant nutrition with moisture-retaining technology to create a growing medium suited to sustained ornamental displays.

Regular deadheading, appropriate feeding and careful watering can further help maintain flowering and overall plant quality throughout the season.

Tub & Basket Compost vs Multi Purpose Compost

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is a versatile growing medium suitable for numerous everyday gardening applications, including containers and hanging baskets.

Clover Tub & Basket Compost is the more specialised option for dedicated ornamental container displays. Its formulation includes Moisture Store granules specifically to help manage the greater moisture demands associated with baskets, tubs and pots.

For occasional general potting, a multi-purpose compost provides excellent versatility. For a substantial summer basket or container display, the specialist Tub & Basket formulation provides features targeted specifically at that application.

Tub & Basket vs Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost

Clover offers more than one option for customers creating tubs and hanging baskets.

Clover Tub & Basket Compost is enriched with essential nutrients and Moisture Store granules to support plant growth and improve water retention.

Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost is positioned as the premium option within the range, using Clover's Traditional Gold formulation for customers looking to step up to a higher-specification growing medium.

Both products are specifically targeted at the demands of ornamental plants grown in baskets, tubs and containers.

About Clover

Clover produces growing media for both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Its range includes general-purpose composts alongside specialist formulations developed around particular plants and growing applications.

Tub & Basket Compost is an example of this application-led approach, combining plant nutrition and moisture-management technology specifically for container-grown ornamental plants.

40L Tub & Basket Compost for garden centres

The 40L bag provides a practical retail size for customers planting hanging baskets, patio tubs and seasonal containers, while the specialist formulation gives garden centres a clear alternative to standard multi-purpose compost.

Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet, giving a total nominal growing-media volume of 4,000 litres per pallet.

Clover packaging update

Clover is currently rolling out updated branded packaging across selected products. During this transition, customers may receive the previous packaging design, the newer design, or a mixture of both when ordering multiple bags.

This is a packaging change only. Customers will receive the same Clover Tub & Basket Compost formulation regardless of which current packaging design is supplied.

It is specifically formulated for hanging baskets, tubs, pots and ornamental container displays where plants have high water and nutrient demands.

What are Moisture Store granules?

Moisture Store granules are included in the compost to help retain water within the growing medium, supporting more consistent moisture availability around plant roots.

Will Moisture Store granules mean I need to water less often?

They help the compost retain moisture, but watering frequency will still depend on plant size, container volume and weather. Established hanging baskets may require frequent watering during hot conditions.

Can I use this compost in patio tubs and window boxes?

Yes. The formulation is suitable for hanging baskets as well as tubs, pots, window boxes and other ornamental containers.

Does Clover Tub & Basket Compost contain plant nutrients?

Yes. It is enriched with essential nutrients to support healthy plant establishment and development.

Is Tub & Basket Compost better than multi-purpose compost for hanging baskets?

Will I need to feed plants later in the season?

Vigorous plants grown for a long season can eventually require additional nutrition. Supplementary feeding should be matched to the plants being grown and applied according to the fertiliser manufacturer's instructions.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the product image?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging. Either current packaging design may therefore be supplied during the changeover while the compost formulation remains the same.

Clover 4 Plant Growing Bag - Nutrient-Rich Grow Bag for Tomatoes, Peppers & Vegetables

£3.83

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover 4 Plant Growing Bag is a convenient ready-filled grow bag containing nutrient-rich compost for growing tomatoes, peppers and a wide range of other productive and ornamental plants. Designed to accommodate up to four suitable plants, it provides a simple way to establish crops without the need for separate pots and loose compost.

Grow bags are particularly useful where garden space is limited or where plants are being grown on patios, in greenhouses or other productive growing areas. The enclosed format provides each plant with a defined volume of growing medium while keeping planting straightforward and tidy.

Clover's growing bag is supplied ready for planting and contains the nutrients required to support plants during establishment and early development. As plants mature and begin producing substantial growth, flowers and fruit, feeding and watering can be adjusted according to crop demand.

Creation Horticulture supplies 100 Clover 4 Plant Growing Bags per full pallet.

Why choose the Clover 4 Plant Growing Bag?

Designed for up to four plants - provides designated growing positions within one convenient bag.
Ready-filled growing medium - no separate container and compost combination is required.
Nutrient-rich compost - provides plants with nutrition to support establishment and early growth.
Ideal for tomatoes and peppers - particularly useful for popular productive greenhouse and patio crops.
Suitable for other vegetables and herbs - a versatile option for a range of suitable edible plants.
Useful for ornamental plants - can also be used for suitable flowering plants.
Space-efficient growing - useful where conventional beds or large individual containers are impractical.
Simple seasonal growing - plant directly into the bag and manage watering and feeding as the crop develops.

What can you grow in a Clover Growing Bag?

Clover's 4 Plant Growing Bag is suitable for a variety of edible and ornamental plants. Popular applications include:

Tomatoes
Peppers
Chillies
Suitable herbs
Salad crops
Suitable vegetables
Seasonal flowering plants

The number of plants used should always reflect the mature size and vigour of the chosen crop. Although the bag provides four planting positions, particularly vigorous plants may benefit from additional root space rather than automatically filling every position.

How to use a Clover 4 Plant Growing Bag

Before planting, position the bag in its final growing location. Once planted and thoroughly watered, moving a growing bag becomes considerably more difficult and can disturb established plants.

Gently work the bag to distribute the compost evenly before opening the designated planting positions. Make an opening large enough to accommodate the plant's root ball, place the plant into the compost and gently firm the growing medium around it.

Water after planting and continue to monitor moisture carefully while the roots establish. Where crops require support, install canes, strings or another suitable support system without damaging the bag or root system.

Growing tomatoes in a Clover Grow Bag

Tomatoes are one of the most popular crops for grow bags. The format provides a convenient contained root zone and works particularly well in greenhouses, on patios and in other sunny growing positions.

Tomato plants become increasingly demanding as they mature. Regular watering becomes especially important once plants develop substantial foliage and begin setting fruit.

Avoid allowing the growing medium to repeatedly swing between extremely dry and heavily saturated conditions. Consistent moisture management helps maintain steady plant development and is particularly important once fruit is forming.

Taller tomato varieties will also require suitable support as they grow.

Watering plants in a growing bag

Growing bags contain a finite volume of compost, so moisture can be used relatively quickly by large, actively growing plants.

Check the growing medium regularly, particularly during warm and sunny weather. Water requirements will increase as root systems develop and plants produce more foliage, flowers and fruit.

Water should reach the root zone rather than merely wetting the surface. At the same time, avoid continually saturating the compost, as healthy roots require both moisture and air.

When should grow bag plants be fed?

The compost within the Clover Growing Bag contains plant nutrients to support establishment and initial growth. However, productive crops can have substantial nutrient requirements as they mature.

Once the initial nutrient supply is being depleted, supplementary feeding can be introduced according to the requirements of the crop being grown.

Fruiting plants such as tomatoes and peppers are commonly moved onto an appropriate crop feed as flowering and fruit production develop. Always follow the instructions supplied with the chosen fertiliser rather than increasing concentration in an attempt to accelerate growth.

Space-efficient growing for patios & greenhouses

One of the main advantages of a growing bag is the ability to raise productive plants without a permanent vegetable bed.

Bags can be positioned on suitable greenhouse floors, patios and other stable growing surfaces, making them useful for gardeners working with limited space or areas where planting directly into the ground is not practical.

They also make seasonal crop changes straightforward because the entire growing medium is contained within the bag.

Grow bag vs individual pots

Both systems can produce excellent plants, but a grow bag offers a particularly simple approach. Several plants can share one contained volume of growing medium without purchasing and filling multiple individual containers.

Individual pots provide greater control over the root volume and watering of each plant, while a growing bag offers convenience and efficient use of available growing space.

The best option depends on the crop, available space and preferred growing method.

Can I grow tomatoes in this grow bag?

Yes. Tomatoes are an ideal crop for grow bags. Remember that plants will require increasing amounts of water as they become larger and begin producing fruit.

Can I grow peppers and chillies in it?

Yes. Peppers and chillies are well suited to container and grow-bag cultivation where suitable warmth, light, watering and nutrition are provided.

Do I need to add compost before planting?

No. The Clover Growing Bag is supplied already filled with growing medium, so plants can be established directly into the bag.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost 20L - Nutrient Enriched Compost for Pots, Seeds & Hanging Baskets

£3.49

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Multi Purpose Compost 20L is a consistent, high-quality growing medium with a nutrient-enriched formula and added wetting agent for easier watering. Designed as a versatile all-round compost, it can be used for seed sowing, potting, containers and hanging baskets.

The compact 20 litre bag provides the same versatile Clover Multi Purpose Compost in a convenient size for smaller gardening jobs, individual pots, seasonal planting and customers who do not require a larger bag.

Its combination of plant nutrients and a wetting agent makes it suitable for a broad range of everyday growing applications, reducing the need to purchase a different compost for every routine planting task.

Supplied in a 20 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 150 x 20L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Multi Purpose Compost?

Versatile multi-purpose compost - suitable for a broad range of everyday gardening and growing applications.
Nutrient-enriched formula - formulated with plant nutrients to support healthy establishment and growth.
Added wetting agent - helps the growing medium absorb water more readily for easier watering.
Suitable for seed sowing - officially recommended by Clover as one of the product's core applications.
Ideal for potting - suitable for potting and repotting a wide variety of suitable plants.
Excellent for containers - a practical all-round choice for patio pots, planters and seasonal displays.
Suitable for hanging baskets - provides a convenient growing medium for basket planting.
Convenient 20L bag - easy to handle and ideal when a larger volume of compost is unnecessary.

What can Clover Multi Purpose Compost 20L be used for?

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to cover many of the most common gardening jobs with a single growing medium. Clover specifically lists it for:

Seed sowing
Potting and repotting
Pots and containers
Hanging baskets

This versatility makes it particularly useful for mixed gardens where several different types of planting may be carried out from the same bag.

Nutrient enriched with a wetting agent

Clover formulates its Multi Purpose Compost with both plant nutrients and a wetting agent. The wetting agent is incorporated to make watering easier by helping water spread into the growing medium rather than simply running away from a dry surface.

This is particularly useful in containers and hanging baskets, where the relatively limited volume of growing medium means moisture needs to be managed carefully throughout the growing season.

Although the compost contains nutrients, plants grown for extended periods in containers may eventually require supplementary feeding as the available nutrients are used. Follow the requirements of the individual plant and the instructions supplied with any fertiliser used.

Using Clover Multi Purpose Compost for seed sowing

Clover lists seed sowing as a suitable application for its Multi Purpose Compost, making this 20L bag useful for gardeners starting flowers, vegetables and other suitable plants from seed.

Fill clean trays, modules or pots with fresh compost and level the surface without heavily compacting it. Sow at the depth recommended for the individual seed and water gently to avoid disturbing freshly sown material.

For growers who prefer a dedicated propagation medium, Clover also produces specialist Seed & Cutting Compost and traditional John Innes Seed Compost.

Using Clover Multi Purpose Compost in pots & containers

For potting and container growing, choose a clean container with suitable drainage. Add fresh compost, position the plant at an appropriate depth and fill around the root system, gently firming the compost without excessive compaction.

Water thoroughly after planting and allow surplus water to drain. Thereafter, monitor the compost rather than watering to a rigid timetable. Requirements will change with plant size, container volume, weather and location.

Suitable for hanging baskets

Hanging baskets are another application specifically identified by Clover for its Multi Purpose Compost. The nutrient-enriched formulation and wetting agent make it a versatile option for seasonal basket planting.

Hanging baskets can dry more quickly than larger ground-level containers, particularly during warm or windy weather, so moisture should be checked regularly.

For gardeners wanting a more specialised basket medium, Clover also produces dedicated Tub & Basket compost formulations.

Why choose the 20L bag?

The 20L size is ideal where the versatility of Clover Multi Purpose Compost is required without the volume of a larger 40L, 50L, 60L or 75L bag.

It is particularly convenient for customers with smaller gardens, balconies and patios, as well as occasional potting jobs, individual hanging baskets and seasonal planting.

For garden centres and nurseries, the smaller format also provides an accessible option for customers who want a manageable bag rather than a full-size growing-media pack.

About Clover Multi Purpose Compost

Clover manufactures a broad range of retail and professional growing media, including multi-purpose and specialist compost formulations.

Clover describes its Multi Purpose Compost as a consistent, high-quality compost with a nutrient-enriched formula and wetting agent, suitable for seed sowing, potting, containers and hanging baskets.

The Multi Purpose range is produced in several bag sizes, allowing customers to choose a pack suited to the scale of the job while retaining the same familiar all-round application.

Clover packaging update

Clover is currently rolling out updated branded packaging across selected products. During this transition, customers may receive the previous packaging design, the newer design, or a mixture of both when ordering multiple bags.

This is a packaging change only. Customers will receive the same Clover Multi Purpose Compost regardless of which current packaging design is supplied.

Cucumbers
Lettuce
Melons
Strawberries
Other suitable summer salad and fruiting crops

The number of plants grown in each bag should be adjusted according to the crop. Larger, vigorous plants require more root space than smaller salad crops, so avoid overcrowding simply to maximise the number of plants per bag.

How to plant a Clover Tomato & Salad Crop Bag

Position the crop bag in its final growing location before planting, particularly if it will be used in a greenhouse or another area where moving a planted bag later would be inconvenient.

Before planting, Clover recommends adding approximately 5-10 litres of water to each bag. Allow the growing medium to absorb the moisture rather than planting into a completely dry bag.

Use the marked planting positions on the bag as a guide, adjusting the final number of plants according to the crop being grown. Make suitable planting openings, create space within the growing medium and plant at the appropriate depth for the crop.

After planting, water carefully to settle the growing medium around the roots and continue monitoring moisture as the plants establish.

Watering tomatoes & salad crops in grow bags

Careful watering is particularly important when growing vigorous crops in bags because the available volume of growing medium is limited compared with open ground.

Clover advises that the growing medium should not be allowed to dry out, but overwatering should also be avoided because prolonged waterlogging can reduce the amount of air available around the roots.

Water demand will increase as plants establish, temperatures rise and fruiting crops develop larger canopies. Check the moisture condition regularly rather than relying on a fixed watering interval.

During warm summer conditions, established tomatoes and other vigorous crops may require considerably more frequent watering than young plants at the beginning of the growing cycle.

Feeding for sustained cropping

The Clover Tomato & Salad Crop Bag contains organic nutrients and natural seaweed extract to support crop establishment and development.

As plants mature and cropping increases, however, their nutritional demand also rises. Clover recommends supplementary liquid feeding for improved and sustained cropping.

Choose an appropriate feed for the crop being grown and follow the fertiliser manufacturer's application instructions. Tomatoes and other heavy-fruiting crops can have substantial nutritional requirements during flowering and fruit development.

Ideal for garden centres & horticultural retailers

Tomato and vegetable growing remains an important seasonal gardening category, and a specialist crop bag provides customers with a simple route into growing productive plants without requiring separate pots and bags of compost.

For garden centres and horticultural retailers, Clover Tomato & Salad Crop Bags pair naturally with tomato plants, vegetable plants, canes, supports, watering accessories and specialist feeds, making them a useful component of a complete seasonal growing range.

Creation Horticulture supplies this product in trade quantities, with 66 crop bags per pallet.

Clover Organic Soil Conditioner 60L - Natural Organic Fibre & Humus Soil Improver

£6.45

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Organic Soil Conditioner 60L is a natural source of organic fibre and humus designed to improve the structure and condition of garden soil. Suitable for both heavy clay and light, dry soils, it helps improve drainage, moisture retention and the overall physical condition of the soil before planting.

Unlike a potting compost, this product is intended primarily as a soil improver. It is incorporated into existing garden soil to increase organic matter and help create a better environment for developing roots.

Its benefits work in two very different soil types. In heavy clay soils, incorporating organic material helps improve structure and drainage. In light and sandy soils, the added organic matter helps improve the soil's ability to retain moisture.

Clover also identifies its Organic Soil Conditioner as helping to suppress common weeds, making it a versatile product for preparing and improving beds, borders and other cultivated garden areas.

Why choose Clover Organic Soil Conditioner?

Natural source of organic fibre and humus - adds valuable organic material to existing garden soil.
Improves difficult soils - useful for improving both heavy and light soil types.
Improves heavy clay soil - helps create better structure and drainage when thoroughly incorporated.
Improves moisture retention in dry soils - organic matter helps light and sandy soils hold moisture more effectively.
Supports better soil structure - creates a more favourable physical environment for plant roots.
Helps suppress common weeds - an additional benefit identified by Clover for this specialist soil conditioner.
Ideal before planting - incorporate into beds and borders during soil preparation.
Versatile garden soil improver - suitable for areas intended for flowers, vegetables, shrubs and other garden planting.
Generous 60L bag - practical for larger beds, borders and general garden improvement.

Improve clay, sandy & tired garden soils

Different soils present very different challenges, which is why adding organic matter is such a useful part of garden soil management.

Heavy clay soil

Heavy soils can become dense and difficult to work, particularly when wet. Incorporating Clover Organic Soil Conditioner adds organic material that helps improve the physical structure of the soil and encourages better drainage.

Light & sandy soil

Sandy soils tend to drain rapidly and can lose moisture quickly during warm weather. Clover Organic Soil Conditioner adds organic fibre and humus, helping improve moisture retention and giving light soil more body.

Tired cultivated soil

Beds and borders that have been cultivated repeatedly can benefit from the regular addition of organic matter. Incorporating a soil conditioner helps maintain and improve the physical condition of the soil rather than simply adding plant nutrients.

Where can Clover Organic Soil Conditioner be used?

This soil improver can be incorporated into existing soil across a wide range of garden areas, including:

Flower beds and borders
Vegetable plots
Raised beds containing existing soil
Shrub planting areas
Areas being prepared for new planting
Heavy clay soils requiring structural improvement
Light and sandy soils requiring improved moisture retention
Established cultivated areas where additional organic matter is required

Because this is a soil conditioner rather than a conventional potting compost, it is best used to improve existing soil rather than as a standalone growing medium for filling pots and containers.

How to use an organic soil conditioner

Spread the soil conditioner over the area to be improved and thoroughly incorporate it into the existing soil before planting. Concentrate on the root zone where improved soil structure will provide the greatest benefit to establishing plants.

For established beds and borders, it can be incorporated when preparing areas between planting cycles or when renovating tired soil.

The quantity required will depend on the existing soil condition and the area being improved. Very heavy clay, extremely light sandy soil or ground low in organic matter may benefit from more substantial improvement than already well-conditioned garden soil.

Soil conditioner vs compost: what's the difference?

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, Clover Organic Soil Conditioner has a different primary purpose from a standard multi-purpose potting compost.

A potting compost is formulated to provide a growing medium in which plants can be raised directly. A soil conditioner is incorporated into existing soil to improve its physical characteristics and organic matter content.

This makes Clover Organic Soil Conditioner particularly useful for gardeners looking to improve beds, borders and vegetable plots rather than simply filling pots.

Why organic matter matters

Maintaining organic matter is an important part of looking after cultivated soil. Organic material influences soil structure, water management and the environment surrounding plant roots.

In heavy soils, it can help create a more workable structure with improved movement of air and water. In lighter soils, organic matter can improve moisture retention and reduce the tendency for water to drain away too rapidly.

This is why the same Clover Organic Soil Conditioner can be useful at opposite ends of the soil spectrum, from dense clay to free-draining sandy ground.

About Clover

Clover has around 50 years of experience producing growing media for farms, nurseries, gardens and greenhouses across the UK. Its range extends from retail composts and soil improvers through to growing media for professional horticultural production.

The Organic Soil Conditioner is part of Clover's retail range and is specifically designed for improving existing garden soils. Rather than being another general-purpose compost, its role is to add organic fibre and humus where the soil itself needs improvement.

Clover packaging update

Clover is currently rolling out updated branded packaging across selected products. During this transition, customers may receive the previous packaging design, the newer design, or a mixture of both when ordering multiple bags.

This is a packaging change only. Customers will receive the same Clover Organic Soil Conditioner regardless of which current packaging design is supplied.

Clover Garden Peat 60L - Sphagnum Moss Peat Soil Conditioner & Garden Improver

£5.17

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Garden Peat 60L is a traditional sphagnum moss peat soil conditioner designed to improve the structure, moisture management and workability of garden soils. It can be incorporated into both heavy clay and light sandy soils, helping create improved conditions for healthy root development.

Rather than being a complete multi-purpose compost, Clover Garden Peat is primarily used as a soil-conditioning and growing-media ingredient. Its physical characteristics make it useful for modifying existing soils and for gardeners who specifically require sphagnum moss peat for their own growing-media applications.

In heavy soils, peat can help improve structure and create a more workable root environment. In light and sandy soils, its moisture-holding properties can add body and help the soil retain water for longer.

Supplied in a 60 litre bag, Clover Garden Peat is suitable for beds, borders and other garden soil-improvement applications. Creation Horticulture supplies 75 x 60L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Garden Peat?

Sphagnum moss peat - a traditional horticultural material widely used for soil conditioning and growing-media applications.
Improves soil structure - useful when incorporating organic material into difficult garden soils.
Helps improve heavy clay soils - adds fibrous material that can improve workability, aeration and physical structure.
Adds body to light sandy soils - useful for soils that are naturally loose and very free draining.
Improves moisture retention - peat has strong water-holding characteristics that can benefit rapidly drying soils.
Useful growing-media ingredient - suitable for gardeners who formulate or amend growing media for particular applications.
Versatile soil conditioner - suitable for incorporating into beds, borders and cultivated garden soils.
Large 60L bag - practical for substantial soil-improvement and garden projects.

Improving garden soil with sphagnum moss peat

Soil texture has a major influence on drainage, aeration, moisture availability and root development. Clover Garden Peat can be incorporated into existing soil to modify some of these physical characteristics.

Heavy clay soils

Clay soils contain very fine particles and can become dense, sticky and difficult to work when wet. Incorporating fibrous soil-conditioning materials can help improve the physical structure of cultivated clay soil.

Clover Garden Peat can be thoroughly mixed through the planting area as part of soil preparation, helping create a more workable environment around developing roots.

Light & sandy soils

At the opposite end of the spectrum, sandy soils can drain extremely quickly and often have relatively low moisture-holding capacity.

Incorporating peat adds fine organic material and body to these soils while helping increase their ability to retain moisture. This can make water management easier during dry periods and active plant growth.

Where can Clover Garden Peat be used?

Garden peat is a versatile horticultural material rather than a crop-specific compost. Typical applications include:

Improving heavy garden soils
Adding moisture retention to light and sandy soils
Preparing flower beds and borders
Improving cultivated planting areas
Adding organic material to existing soil
General garden soil conditioning
Use as a component in suitable growing-media mixes

The exact way peat is used should depend on the existing soil and the requirements of the plants being grown. It should not automatically be treated as a direct replacement for a formulated multi-purpose compost.

Garden peat vs multi-purpose compost

Although both products may look similar in the bag, garden peat and formulated multi-purpose compost are not the same product.

Clover Garden Peat is primarily a raw horticultural material and soil conditioner. It is useful for modifying soil structure, increasing moisture retention and as a component in suitable growing-media formulations.

A multi-purpose compost is a formulated growing medium containing a combination of ingredients selected to provide appropriate physical conditions and plant nutrition for direct planting.

For routine potting, seed sowing and hanging baskets, a formulated compost is generally the more convenient choice. Clover Garden Peat is aimed at customers who specifically want peat for soil conditioning or their own growing-media applications.

How to use Clover Garden Peat as a soil conditioner

For garden soil improvement, spread the required quantity across the area and work it thoroughly into the existing soil rather than leaving it as a separate layer.

Concentrate on the cultivated root zone so that the existing mineral soil and added peat become well integrated. The amount required will vary according to the condition, texture and volume of soil being improved.

Very heavy clay or extremely light sandy soils may require more substantial amendment than an already well-structured loam.

Moisture retention in light soils

One of the best-known characteristics of sphagnum peat is its ability to hold a substantial quantity of water relative to its dry weight.

When incorporated into very light or sandy soil, this characteristic helps increase the amount of moisture retained within the cultivated root zone rather than allowing water to drain through extremely quickly.

This does not remove the need for irrigation, but it can help create a more manageable soil environment for plants during dry weather.

Important: peat is not a complete plant feed

Clover Garden Peat should not be confused with a fertilised potting compost. Peat is valued primarily for its physical properties as a soil conditioner and growing-media component.

Plant nutrition should therefore be considered separately according to the existing soil, crop and intended use. Where plants are being grown directly in containers, a properly formulated growing medium is generally more appropriate unless the gardener is deliberately creating their own substrate formulation.

About Clover

Clover is a specialist manufacturer of growing media supplying both retail gardening and professional horticulture. Its range includes formulated composts, specialist growing media and soil-conditioning products for different applications.

Clover Garden Peat provides a straightforward traditional horticultural material for customers who specifically require sphagnum moss peat, complementing Clover's wider range of ready-formulated multi-purpose and specialist composts.

Clover Garden Peat 60L FAQs

What is Clover Garden Peat?

Clover Garden Peat is sphagnum moss peat supplied as a horticultural soil conditioner and growing-media ingredient. It can be incorporated into existing garden soil to modify its physical characteristics.

Is garden peat the same as multi-purpose compost?

No. Garden peat is primarily a soil conditioner and growing-media component, whereas multi-purpose compost is a formulated growing medium designed for direct use across a range of planting applications.

Is Clover Garden Peat good for clay soil?

It can be incorporated into heavy clay soil as part of soil improvement, adding fibrous material and helping improve structure, aeration and workability.

Can I use Garden Peat in sandy soil?

Yes. Its moisture-holding characteristics can be particularly useful in light and sandy soils that naturally drain and dry quickly.

Can I plant directly into Garden Peat?

Garden peat is not the same as a complete formulated potting compost. For general direct planting in containers, use an appropriate formulated growing medium unless you are deliberately creating a suitable substrate mix.

Does Garden Peat contain enough fertiliser for plants?

It should not be treated as a complete plant feed. Its principal purpose is soil conditioning and use as a growing-media component, so plant nutrition should be managed according to the soil, crop and application.

How should Garden Peat be added to existing soil?

Spread it across the area being improved and thoroughly incorporate it through the cultivated root zone. The quantity required will depend on the soil type and the degree of improvement needed.

Why might the Clover Garden Peat bag look different from the photograph?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging. Either current packaging design may therefore be supplied during the changeover while the product itself remains the same.

Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost 50L - Slow Release Feed & Water-Retaining Compost

£6.21

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost 50L is a professional-quality peat-based growing medium specially formulated for hanging baskets, tubs and ornamental container displays. Made using high-quality screened and blended Irish peat, it combines slow-release fertiliser with a water-holding polymer to support sustained nutrition and more consistent moisture around developing roots.

Containers and hanging baskets place particular demands on a growing medium. Plants are growing within a restricted volume, can use nutrients rapidly and may dry much faster than plants established in open ground. Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost is formulated specifically with these conditions in mind.

Its slow-release fertiliser provides a continuing source of nutrition, while Clover's water-holding polymer helps retain moisture within the compost. Together, these features make Traditional Gold particularly well suited to colourful summer displays and ornamental plants grown in containers.

Supplied in a 50 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 50L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost?

Specialist tub and basket compost - formulated specifically for ornamental plants grown in hanging baskets, tubs and containers.
Slow-release fertiliser - provides a continuing source of nutrients to support plant growth over time.
Water-holding polymer - helps retain moisture within the growing medium and reduces the speed at which containers dry out.
Screened and blended Irish peat - manufactured using high-quality peat selected for professional-quality growing media.
Balanced root environment - formulated to provide an appropriate balance of air, water and nutrients.
Ideal for hanging baskets - particularly useful for vigorous seasonal flowering plants with high water and nutrient demand.
Excellent for tubs and patio containers - provides a dedicated growing medium for ornamental container displays.
Suitable for a wide range of ornamental plants - useful across many popular bedding and container plant varieties.
Professional-quality formulation - developed to Clover's professional growing-media standards for home garden use.

Designed specifically for tubs & hanging baskets

Hanging baskets and patio containers create a very different growing environment from open garden soil. Root space is limited, moisture reserves are smaller and vigorous plants can quickly consume available nutrients.

Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost addresses these challenges with two important additions: slow-release fertiliser and a water-holding polymer.

The fertiliser helps maintain nutrient availability as plants establish and develop, while the polymer helps the growing medium retain water. This is particularly valuable during warmer weather when established baskets and containers can dry rapidly.

What can Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost be used for?

This is a specialist ornamental container compost rather than a general soil improver. Typical applications include:

Plants with specialist pH, drainage or nutritional requirements may require a more specific growing medium, but Traditional Gold is designed to suit a wide range of ornamental container plants.

Water-holding polymer for improved moisture management

One of the standout features of Clover Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost is its water-holding polymer.

Hanging baskets are especially vulnerable to drying because they have a relatively small volume of growing medium exposed to moving air on several sides. Tubs and patio pots can experience similar problems during hot, bright or windy weather.

The water-holding polymer helps retain moisture within the growing medium, making more water available between irrigation events and helping maintain more consistent root-zone conditions.

It does not make the compost maintenance-free. Established summer baskets can still have a substantial water requirement, so moisture levels should be checked regularly and watering adjusted according to plant size, weather and container volume.

Slow-release fertiliser for sustained nutrition

Traditional Gold contains slow-release fertiliser to help maintain nutrient availability as plants develop.

This is particularly useful for vigorous flowering plants because their nutrient demand increases substantially as they develop a larger canopy and begin producing repeated flushes of flowers.

The slow-release nutrition provides a strong foundation, although very vigorous plants maintained for an extended season may eventually benefit from supplementary feeding according to their individual requirements.

Where additional fertiliser is required, select a product appropriate for the plants being grown and follow the manufacturer's application instructions.

How to plant tubs & baskets with Traditional Gold Compost

Fill the chosen basket, tub or planter with Clover Traditional Gold, allowing sufficient room for the root balls of the plants being installed. Position plants at an appropriate depth and fill carefully around the roots with fresh compost.

Gently firm the compost to remove large air gaps without heavily compacting the growing medium. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the compost around the roots.

Containers should have suitable drainage so excess water can escape. Once plants become established, check them frequently as their water requirements can increase significantly during active growth and warm weather.

Made for colourful seasonal displays

Traditional Gold is particularly well suited to the high-impact flowering displays associated with summer tubs and baskets.

Popular ornamental container plants can produce substantial growth from a relatively small volume of compost. Providing suitable moisture management and sustained nutrition helps support the dense foliage and flowering expected from these displays.

It is suitable for mixed baskets and containers as well as single-variety displays, provided the plants selected have compatible growing and watering requirements.

About Clover Traditional Gold

Clover manufactures growing media for both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Its Traditional Gold products bring features associated with professional-quality growing media into formulations developed for home garden applications.

Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost uses high-quality screened and blended Irish peat and is formulated to provide a suitable balance of air, water and nutrients for ornamental container plants.

The inclusion of slow-release fertiliser and a water-holding polymer differentiates it from a basic general-purpose compost and makes it particularly relevant to the demands of baskets, tubs and seasonal container displays.

50L Tub & Basket Compost for garden centres

The 50L bag provides a practical retail size for customers planting hanging baskets, tubs and seasonal containers. Its specialist formulation also gives garden centres a clear step-up option from standard general-purpose compost for customers creating ornamental displays.

Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 50L bags per full pallet, equivalent to a total nominal growing-media volume of 4,000 litres per pallet.

Clover Top Soil 25L - Screened Natural Topsoil for Lawns, Beds & Borders

£5.26

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Top Soil 25L is a high-quality, finely screened natural topsoil for general garden and landscaping applications. Ideal for improving beds and borders, levelling lawns, filling raised areas and preparing ground for turf, it provides a practical soil-based material for a wide range of outdoor projects.

Topsoil forms the productive upper layer of garden ground and provides the foundation in which lawns, flowers, shrubs and other plants establish their roots. Clover Top Soil offers a convenient bagged option for projects where additional soil is required without the need to order loose bulk material.

Its finely screened consistency makes it particularly useful for garden preparation, levelling and general landscaping work where an even, workable material is required.

Supplied in a convenient 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Top Soil?

Finely screened natural soil - a practical, workable material for general garden and landscaping projects.
Ideal for lawn preparation - useful when preparing and levelling areas before turfing or grass establishment.
Suitable for beds and borders - use where additional topsoil is required to build up or improve planting areas.
Useful for garden levelling - convenient for filling shallow depressions and correcting uneven areas.
Suitable for landscaping - a versatile material for new and existing garden projects.
Useful for raised planting areas - can form part of the soil profile when creating or topping up suitable beds.
Convenient bagged format - easier to handle and store than loose bulk topsoil for smaller projects.
25L bag - useful for targeted repairs, maintenance and incremental landscaping work.

What can Clover Top Soil be used for?

Clover Top Soil is suitable for a wide range of general gardening and landscaping applications, including:

Preparing ground before laying turf
Levelling and repairing lawn areas
Building up beds and borders
General garden landscaping
Filling shallow depressions in garden soil
Creating and topping up suitable raised planting areas
Adding soil to areas where existing levels need to be increased
General ground preparation before planting

Topsoil for lawns & turf preparation

A well-prepared soil base is important when establishing a new lawn. Clover Top Soil can be used to help create an even surface before laying turf or establishing grass in suitable areas.

Prepare the existing ground by removing unwanted vegetation, stones and debris, then cultivate and level the area as required. Additional topsoil can be used where levels need correcting or where the existing soil layer needs building up.

Before turf is laid, the prepared surface should be reasonably level and firm without being heavily compacted. This gives new grass roots a suitable soil layer into which they can begin establishing.

Using topsoil in beds & borders

Clover Top Soil is also useful when creating new beds and borders or restoring soil levels in existing garden areas.

Where appropriate, topsoil can be combined with organic soil improvers to create a more suitable planting environment. Products such as well-rotted manure or soil conditioner perform a different role from topsoil by adding organic matter to the soil.

The requirements of the plants being grown should always be considered. Species requiring specialist acidic, alkaline or particularly free-draining conditions may require further soil preparation or a dedicated growing medium.

Using topsoil for raised beds

Topsoil can form an important part of the growing profile in raised beds and larger planting areas. Where significant volumes are required, it can be combined with suitable organic matter or other soil-improvement materials according to the intended use.

Clover's 25L bagged format is particularly useful for topping up existing raised beds, making localised adjustments or completing smaller projects where loose bulk soil would be inconvenient.

Topsoil vs compost - what's the difference?

Although both are widely used in gardens, topsoil and compost are not the same product.

Topsoil is soil-based material used for building up ground levels, establishing lawns, creating planting areas and general landscaping.

Potting and multi-purpose composts are formulated growing media intended primarily for applications such as containers, pots and other controlled growing situations.

Soil conditioners and farmyard manure are primarily used to introduce organic matter and improve existing soil.

Choosing the correct product for the job helps create a more appropriate root environment and avoids using expensive potting compost where a soil-based landscaping material is actually required.

How much area does a 25L bag cover?

Coverage depends entirely on the depth at which the topsoil is applied. A 25 litre bag contains a nominal 0.025m³ of material.

As a simple guide, 25 litres is theoretically enough to cover approximately 2.5m² at 10mm depth, 1.25m² at 20mm depth or 0.5m² at 50mm depth.

Actual coverage will vary because natural soil settles and compacts during handling, spreading and use. Allow additional material where substantial levelling, filling or changes in ground height are required.

About Clover

Clover Top Soil 25L FAQs

What is Clover Top Soil used for?

It is a finely screened natural soil suitable for general landscaping, preparing and levelling lawns, improving beds and borders and building up suitable garden areas.

Can I use Clover Top Soil before laying turf?

Yes. Topsoil can be used to prepare and level suitable ground before turf is laid, helping provide a soil layer into which new grass roots can establish.

Is topsoil the same as multi-purpose compost?

No. Topsoil is a soil-based landscaping material, whereas multi-purpose compost is a formulated growing medium commonly used for pots, containers and other planting applications.

Can Clover Top Soil be used in raised beds?

Yes. It can form part of the soil profile in suitable raised beds and is particularly useful for topping up existing beds or adjusting soil levels.

Can I mix topsoil with farmyard manure or soil conditioner?

Yes. Where appropriate for the intended planting, organic soil improvers can be incorporated to add organic matter and improve the condition of the soil.

How much does one 25L bag of topsoil cover?

Coverage depends on application depth. Theoretical coverage is approximately 2.5m² at 10mm, 1.25m² at 20mm or 0.5m² at 50mm. Actual coverage can vary as natural soil settles and compacts.

Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing 25L - Fine Top Dressing for Lawns & Sports Turf

£6.79

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing 25L is a fine-grade top dressing developed for lawns, bowling greens and sports turf. Applied as a thin layer over established grass, it can help improve surface levels, support healthy turf growth and form part of a regular lawn renovation and maintenance programme.

Top dressing is widely used to maintain established turf because it allows small quantities of material to be worked gradually into the surface. Rather than covering the grass, the dressing is spread thinly and worked down towards the soil surface between the blades.

Clover's fine-grade formulation makes it suitable for both domestic lawns and more intensively maintained turf areas where an even surface and consistent finish are important.

Supplied in a convenient 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 60 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing?

Fine-grade lawn dressing - designed to spread evenly across established turf.
Helps improve surface levels - useful for gradually correcting minor irregularities and creating a more even lawn surface.
Supports healthy grass growth - provides fresh material around the base of established turf.
Suitable for lawn renovation - ideal for use as part of seasonal lawn maintenance and repair.
Suitable for sports turf - developed for maintained grass areas as well as domestic lawns.
Suitable for bowling greens - the fine-grade material can be worked into closely maintained turf.
Useful after aeration and scarification - can be incorporated into a wider lawn renovation programme.
Convenient 25L bag - practical for lawn repairs, smaller gardens and targeted maintenance.

What is lawn dressing used for?

Lawn dressing is applied over existing grass rather than being used as a replacement for the underlying soil. Typical applications include:

Routine lawn maintenance
Seasonal turf renovation
Levelling minor surface irregularities
Working material into the surface following aeration
Using alongside overseeding
Maintaining bowling greens
Maintaining suitable sports turf
Repairing worn or uneven lawn areas

For substantial changes in ground level or the preparation of a completely new lawn, a suitable topsoil is normally more appropriate. Lawn dressing is intended primarily for gradual surface improvement and maintenance of established turf.

How to apply lawn top dressing

Before applying the dressing, mow the lawn to an appropriate height and remove excessive surface debris. If the lawn is being renovated, scarification or aeration can be carried out before top dressing where required.

Distribute the Clover Lawn Dressing evenly across the grass in a light, controlled layer. Work the material into the turf using a suitable lawn lute, levelling tool, brush or the back of a rake.

The objective is to move the dressing down towards the soil surface while leaving the majority of the grass blades exposed. Avoid burying healthy turf beneath a heavy layer of material.

Deeper depressions are better corrected gradually with repeated light applications rather than attempting to raise the surface dramatically in a single treatment.

Ideal for lawn renovation

Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing can be incorporated into a wider renovation programme when an established lawn has become compacted, worn or uneven.

Depending on the condition of the turf, renovation may include mowing, scarifying to remove unwanted thatch, aerating compacted areas, top dressing and overseeding worn patches.

When top dressing follows aeration, some of the fine material can work into the openings created in the surface while the remainder is distributed around the existing grass.

Using lawn dressing when overseeding

Top dressing and overseeding are often combined when renovating thin or worn lawns.

After preparing the existing turf, appropriate grass seed can be distributed over the required area. A light application of fine lawn dressing can then help create closer contact between seed and the prepared surface.

Keep newly seeded areas appropriately moist during germination and avoid heavy traffic while young grass establishes. Always follow the sowing guidance supplied with the chosen grass seed.

Levelling an uneven lawn

Minor hollows and surface irregularities can make mowing more difficult and affect the appearance of a lawn. Fine top dressing provides a way to make gradual adjustments without completely lifting established turf.

Apply additional dressing selectively to shallow depressions and work it into the grass. Where more material is required, build the level progressively so that existing grass can continue growing through the dressing.

Significant depressions or major changes in ground level may require more extensive preparation using topsoil rather than lawn dressing alone.

When should you top dress a lawn?

Lawn dressing is best applied while grass is actively growing and capable of recovering from maintenance work. This makes it particularly useful as part of spring or autumn lawn renovation when conditions are suitable.

Avoid applying a heavy dressing when grass is under significant stress from drought, extreme heat, waterlogging or other adverse conditions.

For professional turf, application timing should form part of the wider maintenance programme and take account of grass species, surface condition, weather and intended use.

Lawn Dressing vs Topsoil

Clover Lawn Dressing and Clover Top Soil are both useful for lawn work, but they perform different jobs.

Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing is a fine-grade material intended for spreading over established turf as part of maintenance, renovation and gradual surface levelling.

Clover Top Soil is better suited to more substantial ground preparation, building soil levels and preparing areas before establishing a new lawn.

For an existing lawn requiring relatively small surface corrections, lawn dressing is generally the more targeted product.

Clover Sports Turf & Lawn Dressing 25L FAQs

What does lawn top dressing do?

Top dressing adds a fine layer of material to established turf and can be used to improve surface levels, support healthy grass growth and complement routine lawn renovation.

Can Clover Lawn Dressing be used on domestic lawns?

Yes. Although suitable for sports turf and bowling greens, it can also be used for regular maintenance and renovation of domestic lawns.

Can I use it after aerating my lawn?

Yes. Top dressing is commonly combined with aeration as part of lawn renovation, allowing fine material to work into the prepared turf surface.

Can lawn dressing be used when overseeding?

Yes. A light dressing can be incorporated into an overseeding programme and can help create good contact between grass seed and the prepared surface.

Can lawn dressing level dips in grass?

It is suitable for gradually correcting minor hollows and uneven areas. Deeper depressions should be corrected progressively, while major level changes may require additional topsoil or more extensive preparation.

Should the grass be completely covered?

No. Lawn dressing should generally be applied as a light layer and worked down towards the soil surface so that established grass remains exposed and can continue growing.

What is the difference between lawn dressing and topsoil?

Lawn dressing is intended for fine surface applications over established turf. Topsoil is better suited to substantial ground preparation, building levels and preparing soil before a new lawn is established.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the product image?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging, so either current packaging design may be supplied during the changeover.

Clover John Innes Seed Compost 25L - Traditional Loam-Based Compost for Seed Sowing

£2.56

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover John Innes Seed Compost 25L is a traditional loam-based seed sowing compost formulated for germinating seeds and supporting healthy young seedlings. Its carefully balanced, relatively low nutrient formulation provides a stable growing environment for early root development without supplying the stronger feed levels associated with composts intended for established plants.

Seedlings begin life with small, delicate root systems, so the compost used at germination needs to provide an appropriate balance of moisture, air, structure and nutrition. John Innes Seed Compost is specifically formulated for this early stage rather than being a general-purpose potting medium.

The loam-based nature of a John Innes formulation gives the compost useful body and stability, making it particularly suitable for seed trays, pots and propagation modules.

Supplied in a convenient 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover John Innes Seed Compost?

Traditional John Innes formulation - a specialist loam-based compost developed specifically for seed sowing.
Designed for germination - provides a suitable environment for seeds during the earliest stage of plant development.
Controlled nutrient level - formulated for young seedlings rather than established, vigorously growing plants.
Supports early root development - creates a stable rooting environment as seedlings become established.
Loam-based growing medium - provides greater body and weight than many lightweight general-purpose growing media.
Ideal for seed trays - suitable for traditional seed-sowing and propagation techniques.
Suitable for pots and modules - useful for individual or batch sowing depending on the crop.
Wide range of seeds - suitable for many flower, vegetable and ornamental species.

What is John Innes Seed Compost?

John Innes is a traditional system of loam-based compost formulations developed for different stages of plant growth. Rather than referring to a brand, the name describes a recognised type of growing medium.

John Innes Seed Compost is the formulation intended for seed sowing and young seedlings. Its nutrient level is deliberately lower than the John Innes potting composts used as plants become larger and require progressively more nutrition.

The inclusion of loam gives John Innes composts their characteristic weight and structure. This can be particularly useful in propagation pots and trays where a stable growing medium is desirable.

How to use Clover John Innes Seed Compost

Fill a clean seed tray, propagation module or pot with fresh compost and gently level the surface. Avoid heavily compressing the growing medium, as developing roots require access to both moisture and air.

Sow seeds according to the requirements of the individual plant species. Seed size and preferred germination conditions determine how deeply each seed should be covered, so always follow the instructions supplied with the seed.

After sowing, water carefully using a fine rose or another gentle method that will not disturb the seeds. Keep the compost appropriately moist throughout germination without leaving it continuously saturated.

Creating the right environment for germination

Compost is only one part of successful seed propagation. Temperature, moisture, light and seed quality all influence germination.

Some seeds require warmth to germinate effectively, while others perform better at cooler temperatures. Light requirements also vary between species, with some seeds needing to remain close to the surface and others requiring covering.

Once germination begins, provide seedlings with the light and ventilation appropriate to the species. Strong early growth depends on balancing these environmental conditions rather than relying on additional fertiliser alone.

Watering newly sown seeds

Newly sown compost should generally be kept appropriately moist but not waterlogged. Excessive watering can reduce the amount of air available around developing roots, while allowing the compost to dry excessively can interrupt germination.

Gentle watering is particularly important immediately after sowing because a strong stream of water can move small seeds, expose them or wash them deeper into the compost.

Trays and pots should have suitable drainage, and moisture should be checked regularly rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

When should seedlings be potted on?

John Innes Seed Compost is intended for germination and early seedling development rather than long-term cultivation of established plants.

Once seedlings are sufficiently developed to handle and have established a suitable root system, they can be transplanted into a growing medium appropriate for the next stage of growth.

The John Innes system includes progressively richer potting composts for established plants, while Clover also produces a range of other potting and multi-purpose growing media.

When transplanting, handle young seedlings carefully and minimise disturbance to their developing roots.

John Innes Seed Compost vs Seed & Cutting Compost

Both products are designed for propagation, but they provide different options depending on the preferred growing method.

Clover John Innes Seed Compost is a traditional loam-based formulation specifically intended for sowing seeds and raising young seedlings.

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost is a fine-textured specialist propagation medium designed for both seed sowing and the rooting of suitable plant cuttings.

For gardeners specifically looking for a traditional, soil-based John Innes seed compost, this 25L formulation is the appropriate choice.

It is specifically formulated for sowing seeds and supporting seedlings through their early stages of development.

Is John Innes a brand?

No. John Innes refers to a traditional system of loam-based compost formulations developed for different stages of plant growth.

Why does seed compost have a lower nutrient level?

Very young seedlings have relatively modest nutritional requirements. A specialist seed compost provides an appropriate nutrient environment for early development rather than the stronger feeding associated with compost for established plants.

Can I sow vegetable seeds in Clover John Innes Seed Compost?

Yes. It is suitable for a wide range of seeds, including many vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants. Follow the germination requirements of the individual species.

Can I keep mature plants in John Innes Seed Compost?

It is primarily intended for germination and young seedlings. Once plants become established, they should normally be moved into a growing medium appropriate for their next stage of development.

Its nutrient-enriched formulation supports plant establishment and growth, while the built-in wetting agent helps the compost accept and distribute water more effectively.

The 100L professional-size bag is an efficient choice where significant volumes of compost are required, reducing the number of individual bags needed for larger potting runs, container displays and seasonal planting.

Creation Horticulture supplies 35 x 100L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal growing-media volume of 3,500 litres per pallet.

Why choose Clover Multi Purpose Compost 100L?

Large 100L format - ideal where substantial quantities of growing medium are required.
Versatile multi-purpose compost - suitable for a wide range of everyday growing applications.
Nutrient-enriched formula - formulated to support healthy plant establishment and development.
Built-in wetting agent - helps the growing medium absorb water more effectively.
Suitable for seed sowing - useful for larger propagation and seasonal sowing programmes.
Ideal for potting - well suited to nurseries and growers carrying out repeated potting work.
Suitable for containers - a practical option for larger pots, planters and seasonal displays.
Suitable for hanging baskets - useful where larger quantities are required for multiple baskets.
Professional and domestic use - suitable for commercial horticulture as well as larger home gardening projects.

Versatile compost for everyday growing

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to cover many common growing applications with a single versatile medium. Clover recommends it for:

Seed sowing
Potting and repotting
Pots and containers
Hanging baskets
Seasonal planting
A wide range of suitable ornamental and edible plants

This versatility is especially useful for professional users handling a mixed range of plants, where a dependable general-purpose growing medium can be used across numerous routine jobs.

100L compost for nurseries & professional growers

The large 100L format makes this version of Clover Multi Purpose Compost particularly attractive for higher-volume users. Nurseries, garden centres, landscapers and professional gardeners can work through significantly fewer bags when carrying out larger potting and planting jobs.

Typical professional applications include batch potting, seasonal container production, hanging basket preparation and general nursery work where a versatile multi-purpose growing medium is required.

For retail customers, the larger bag also offers a practical option for substantial garden projects where several smaller bags would otherwise be required.

Nutrient enriched with a built-in wetting agent

Clover Multi Purpose Compost combines a nutrient-enriched formulation with an incorporated wetting agent.

Wetting agents help water spread into a growing medium more effectively, particularly when the compost surface has started to dry. This can make routine irrigation easier in pots, containers and baskets.

Watering frequency should still be determined by the crop, container size and environmental conditions. Check the growing medium regularly and avoid leaving containers permanently saturated.

Ideal for potting & repotting

For general potting work, select a clean container with suitable drainage and enough space for the developing root system. Add fresh Clover Multi Purpose Compost, position the plant and fill carefully around the roots.

Firm the compost gently without excessive compaction before watering thoroughly and allowing surplus water to drain.

Plants remaining in containers for extended periods should be monitored as they develop. Once the nutrients supplied by the fresh compost begin to be depleted, supplementary feeding may be required according to the needs of the individual plant.

Suitable for seed sowing

Clover lists seed sowing among the recommended applications for its Multi Purpose Compost. The large 100L format is particularly useful where numerous trays, modules or pots are being prepared during busy propagation periods.

Fill clean propagation containers with fresh compost and level the surface without excessive compaction. Sow according to the depth and germination requirements of the individual seed, then water carefully to avoid disturbing freshly sown material.

Clover also offers specialist Seed & Cutting Compost and John Innes Seed Compost where a dedicated propagation medium is preferred.

Pots, planters & hanging baskets

Multi Purpose Compost provides a convenient all-round medium for seasonal containers, patio pots and hanging baskets. The 100L bag is particularly efficient when preparing multiple containers or larger displays.

Container-grown plants have access to a finite volume of compost, so moisture and nutrition should be monitored throughout the growing season. Hanging baskets and smaller containers can dry especially quickly during warm or windy weather.

For intensive summer displays, Clover also produces dedicated Tub & Basket compost formulations where a more specialised growing medium is preferred.

When should I use a specialist compost?

Multi-purpose compost is designed for versatility, but some plants and applications have more specific requirements.

Acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias should be grown in an appropriate ericaceous compost. Clover also offers specialist growing media for seeds and cuttings, roses, trees and shrubs, tubs and baskets, bulbs and traditional John Innes applications.

Selecting a specialist growing medium where necessary helps match the compost more closely to the requirements of the plant.

About Clover Multi Purpose Compost

Clover produces growing media for professional horticulture and the retail gardening market, with both versatile multi-purpose products and specialist formulations for particular crops and applications.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost provides the broad all-round option within the range, combining plant nutrients with a wetting agent for routine sowing, potting and container growing.

Growers Own Perlite 50L

£0.00

Please sign in to see pricing

The Growers Own Perlite 50L is designed for incorporating into suitable growing-media mixes to increase air-filled porosity and modify drainage.

Perlite is a lightweight mineral growing-media component commonly used to alter the physical properties of a substrate. The appropriate inclusion rate depends on the crop, base medium, container, irrigation strategy and production conditions.

Key benefits

Product type: Horticultural Perlite
Designed for incorporating into suitable growing-media mixes to increase air-filled porosity and modify drainage
Stated size/capacity: 50L
Suitable for horticultural use where appropriate

Using perlite in growing media

Blend perlite evenly through a compatible substrate where increased aeration or a change in drainage behaviour is required. Avoid assuming one fixed percentage suits every crop: container depth, peat/coir content, irrigation frequency and crop water demand all affect the ideal physical structure.

Handle dry perlite carefully to minimise airborne dust. Lightly damping material before mixing can help where appropriate.

Root-zone management

Adding perlite changes how water and air occupy pore spaces in the growing medium. Monitor irrigation after changing a mix because a substrate with more perlite may wet and dry differently from the original formulation.

Good working practice

Keep equipment and materials clean and clearly identified. Follow the instructions for any fertiliser, additive or treatment being prepared and use appropriate PPE where required by the product label or workplace assessment.

Storage & maintenance

Store the product clean, dry and protected from damage. Electronic meters should be maintained according to their manufacturer instructions; measuring equipment should be replaced if markings or condition no longer allow reliable use.

Suitable for beginners and experienced gardeners - a straightforward approach to container vegetable growing.
Trade pallet quantity of 60 bags - suitable for garden centres, nurseries and horticultural retailers.

Growing potatoes in a 60L crop bag

Growing potatoes in a dedicated crop bag is a useful alternative to planting them directly into the ground. It allows crops to be grown in a controlled volume of growing medium and is particularly useful where garden space is limited or the existing soil is unsuitable.

Before planting, loosen the growing medium throughout the bag rather than leaving it heavily compressed. Position the bag in its intended growing location and ensure that excess irrigation water is able to drain appropriately.

Plant suitable seed potatoes according to the variety and seasonal planting guidance. Avoid overcrowding the bag, as each plant needs sufficient growing medium, moisture and nutrition to develop effectively.

As the crop develops, regularly check moisture levels and maintain appropriate watering. Potatoes grown in containers cannot access moisture from the surrounding ground, so their water supply depends entirely on the growing medium within the bag.

More than just a potato growing bag

Although potatoes are the headline crop, Clover describes this product as suitable for a wide range of fruit and vegetables, making it a versatile addition to a seasonal edible-growing range.

Crop choice should take account of the available growing volume, mature plant size, spacing requirements and the conditions in which the bag will be positioned.

This flexibility makes the bag particularly useful for gardeners who want to experiment with growing their own produce without committing permanent garden space to vegetable beds.

Ideal for patios, small gardens & container growing

One of the biggest advantages of a self-contained vegetable growing bag is that productive crops can be grown in places where digging a conventional vegetable plot is impractical.

The bag can be positioned in a suitable sunny growing location, making it useful for patios, paved gardens and other areas where access to open soil is limited.

Always consider the mature size and requirements of the chosen crop when positioning the bag. Many productive vegetable crops perform best with good light, consistent moisture and protection from unnecessarily exposed conditions.

Watering crops grown in bags

Consistent watering is important for vegetables grown in containers. The relatively confined root zone means moisture levels can change more rapidly than they would in open ground, particularly during warm or windy weather.

Check the growing medium regularly and water according to the needs of the crop rather than relying on a fixed schedule. The aim is to maintain appropriate moisture without leaving the growing medium continuously saturated.

As plants become larger, their water demand will normally increase. Productive crops may therefore need more frequent attention later in the season than they required immediately after planting.

Natural plant foods for crop establishment

Clover Potato & Vegetable Grow Bag is carefully formulated with natural plant foods, providing a growing medium designed around the needs of productive edible crops.

As plants mature, their nutritional requirements will vary considerably depending on crop type, growth rate and length of the growing season. Where supplementary feeding becomes necessary, choose a fertiliser appropriate for the crop and follow the fertiliser manufacturer's application instructions.

This is particularly important for longer-season and heavy-cropping plants whose nutritional demand can increase substantially as they mature.

Clover Potato & Vegetable Grow Bag FAQs

What size is the Clover Potato & Vegetable Grow Bag?

Each bag contains 60 litres of specialist growing medium, providing a substantial growing volume for suitable fruit and vegetable crops.

Is this grow bag specifically designed for potatoes?

Potatoes are one of its main applications, but Clover describes the product as suitable for a wide range of fruit and vegetables.

Does the Clover Potato & Vegetable Bag contain plant food?

Yes. Clover's official product information describes it as a carefully formulated cropping bag containing natural plant foods.

Can I grow vegetables on a patio with this bag?

Yes. A self-contained crop bag is particularly useful where there is no suitable vegetable bed. Position it in a location appropriate for the crop and ensure plants receive suitable light, water and care.

Do I need a separate pot or planter?

No. The crop bag itself acts as the growing container, making it a convenient option for seasonal vegetable production.

Should I loosen the compost before planting?

Yes. Loosening and distributing the growing medium before planting helps create a more even root zone rather than leaving the contents compressed from transport and storage.

Will vegetables need additional feeding later in the season?

This depends on the crop and length of the growing period. Longer-season and heavy-cropping plants may require supplementary nutrition as they mature. Use a feed suitable for the crop and follow its manufacturer's directions.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the photograph?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated packaging. Either current packaging design may therefore be supplied during the changeover, while the product formulation remains the same.

Is this a general-purpose compost?

No. Clover markets this as a specially formulated cropping bag for fruit and vegetable production rather than as its standard multi-purpose compost.

How many Clover Potato & Vegetable Bags are supplied per pallet?

A full Creation Horticulture pallet contains 60 x 60L bags, providing a total nominal growing media volume of 3,600 litres.

Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost 60L - Premium Compost for Pots, Containers & Baskets

£6.57

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost 60L is a premium growing medium formulated with added John Innes to provide improved moisture management, nutrient availability and greater stability for established plants. It is particularly well suited to bedding plants, pot plants, shrubs, tubs, containers and hanging baskets.

The addition of John Innes distinguishes this formulation from a conventional lightweight multi-purpose compost. The resulting growing medium has greater body and is designed to provide a dependable root environment for plants being grown in containers for extended periods.

This makes Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost an excellent choice for gardeners who want the versatility of a multi-purpose compost with the additional characteristics associated with a John Innes enriched formulation.

Supplied in a generous 60 litre bag, it is suitable for everyday garden use as well as garden centres, landscapers and professional horticultural applications. Creation Horticulture supplies 75 x 60L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost?

John Innes enriched formulation - combines the versatility of multi-purpose compost with the benefits of added John Innes.
Improved moisture retention - formulated to help maintain a more consistent root-zone moisture level.
Long-lasting nutrient availability - designed to provide dependable nutrition for establishing and developing plants.
Greater body and stability - particularly useful for established plants growing in larger pots and containers.
Ideal for bedding plants - suitable for creating colourful seasonal container displays.
Excellent for pot plants - a versatile choice for many plants being maintained in containers.
Suitable for shrubs - useful where a more substantial container growing medium is desirable.
Ideal for tubs and planters - particularly suited to larger seasonal and permanent container displays.
Suitable for hanging baskets - combines moisture management with a nutrient-enriched growing medium.
Large 60L bag - provides plenty of compost for multiple pots, baskets or larger containers.

What does John Innes enriched mean?

John Innes is a familiar name in British gardening and is associated with growing media designed to provide a more substantial and stable root environment.

In this Clover product, the multi-purpose growing medium is enriched with John Innes. This gives gardeners the convenience and versatility of a multi-purpose compost while providing additional body, moisture retention and sustained growing conditions for container plants.

It is particularly useful where plants will remain in their containers for longer periods, or where a more substantial growing medium is preferred for larger plants and pots.

What can Clover John Innes Enriched Compost be used for?

This versatile compost is suitable for a broad range of garden plants and container-growing applications, including:

Bedding plants
Flowering pot plants
Patio containers
Large tubs and planters
Hanging baskets
Shrubs grown in containers
Seasonal displays
Potting and potting-on suitable established plants
General container gardening

Plants requiring a specialist acidic, highly free-draining or otherwise specialised growing medium should be matched with an appropriate dedicated compost instead.

Excellent for pots, tubs & larger containers

Container plants depend entirely on the growing medium surrounding their roots. As plants increase in size and remain in a container for longer, moisture management, nutrition and physical stability become increasingly important.

Clover's John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost is particularly useful in these situations. The added John Innes gives the growing medium greater substance, making it well suited to larger patio pots, tubs and planters.

When potting, choose a container with suitable drainage and enough space for the developing root system. Position the plant at the correct depth, fill around the root ball with fresh compost and gently firm before watering thoroughly.

Suitable for container-grown shrubs

Shrubs can remain in the same container considerably longer than short-season bedding plants, making the choice of growing medium particularly important.

The additional body provided by a John Innes enriched formulation makes this compost a useful option for suitable shrubs and larger established plants grown in containers.

As plants mature, monitor root development and repot where necessary. Large shrubs may eventually require a bigger container and fresh growing medium to maintain healthy root development.

Hanging baskets & seasonal displays

Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost is also suitable for hanging baskets and seasonal flowering displays.

Baskets can experience rapid changes in moisture levels, particularly during warm and windy weather. A growing medium formulated for improved moisture retention can therefore be particularly useful during the main summer growing season.

Check baskets regularly rather than watering to a fixed timetable, as requirements will vary considerably according to basket size, plant maturity and weather conditions.

Improved moisture management

One of the key reasons for choosing a John Innes enriched multi-purpose compost is its ability to provide a more substantial growing environment with improved moisture retention.

This can be particularly useful in patio containers, tubs and hanging baskets where the volume of growing medium is restricted and plants can use significant amounts of water during active growth.

Improved moisture retention does not mean plants should remain permanently wet. Always use containers with appropriate drainage and allow watering frequency to be determined by the plant and growing conditions.

Nutrient-enriched for sustained plant growth

Clover John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost is formulated to provide nutrients for establishing and developing plants, making it well suited to the demands of container growing.

Over time, actively growing plants will use the nutrients available within any compost. Plants maintained in containers for extended periods may therefore require supplementary feeding later in the growing cycle.

Choose a fertiliser appropriate to the plant being grown and follow the feed manufacturer's recommended application instructions.

John Innes enriched vs standard multi-purpose compost

Both products offer broad versatility, but a John Innes enriched formulation is particularly useful where gardeners want a growing medium with additional body and moisture-holding characteristics.

Standard multi-purpose compost is an excellent general option for numerous everyday gardening jobs. John Innes Enriched Multi Purpose Compost is particularly attractive for established plants, larger pots, shrubs, tubs and containers where longer-term growing conditions and physical stability become more important.

This makes it a useful step up for customers looking for a premium general-purpose container compost without moving to a crop-specific specialist formulation.

A professional-quality peat & perlite formulation

Clover Traditional Gold Potting Compost is based on 100% high-quality screened and blended Irish peat. Clover combines this with perlite and carefully selected fertilisers to produce a growing medium designed around the needs of container-grown plants.

Container roots require more than moisture alone. A good potting compost needs to retain sufficient water while maintaining air-filled spaces within the root zone. This balance becomes increasingly important as roots develop and occupy more of the available container volume.

Traditional Gold is formulated specifically to provide the appropriate balance of air, water and nutrients, making it a more specialised choice than a basic general-purpose compost.

Why does Traditional Gold contain perlite?

Perlite is incorporated into Clover Traditional Gold Potting Compost to help improve the physical structure of the growing medium.

The lightweight particles create additional pore spaces within the compost, helping maintain aeration around developing roots and supporting drainage of excess water.

This is particularly useful in container growing, where the root system is confined to a relatively small volume of growing medium and maintaining a healthy balance between moisture and oxygen is important.

The white particles visible within the compost are therefore a deliberate and beneficial component of the Traditional Gold formulation.

Base fertiliser & slow-release nutrition

Traditional Gold Potting Compost contains both a specialist base fertiliser and slow-release fertiliser.

The base fertiliser provides readily available nutrition to support plants as they establish in the fresh growing medium. The slow-release component then provides a continuing source of nutrients to help maintain and enhance plant growth over a longer period.

This combination is particularly useful for plants that will remain in their containers beyond the initial establishment period.

Nutrient demand varies between plant species and increases as plants mature. Long-term or particularly vigorous container plants may eventually require supplementary feeding according to their individual requirements.

What is Clover Traditional Gold Potting Compost suitable for?

Clover identifies Traditional Gold Potting Compost as suitable for a wide range of ornamental, bedding and pot plants. Typical uses include:

Potting ornamental plants
Potting-on established young plants
Bedding plants
Flowering pot plants
Patio containers and planters
Seasonal ornamental displays
General container-grown plants

Plants with specialist pH, drainage or nutritional requirements should be grown in an appropriate specialist compost rather than automatically using a general potting formulation.

Potting & potting-on plants

When repotting a plant, select a clean container with suitable drainage and enough additional volume to accommodate future root development.

Place a layer of fresh Traditional Gold Potting Compost into the container, position the plant at an appropriate depth and fill carefully around the existing root ball. Gently firm the compost to remove large air gaps without heavily compacting the growing medium.

Water after potting to settle the compost around the roots and allow excess water to drain freely.

Newly potted plants should then be managed according to their individual requirements for light, temperature, irrigation and nutrition.

Potting Gold vs ordinary multi-purpose compost

Both products can have a place in container gardening, but Clover Traditional Gold Potting Compost has been specifically formulated as a professional-quality potting medium.

Its combination of screened and blended Irish peat, specialist base fertiliser, perlite and slow-release fertiliser makes it particularly suitable for customers looking for a higher-specification growing medium for ornamental, bedding and pot plants.

Standard multi-purpose compost remains a versatile choice for numerous everyday garden jobs. Traditional Gold Potting Compost is better targeted towards customers who specifically want a premium formulation for pot and container growing.

Potting Gold vs Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost

Although both products belong to Clover's Traditional Gold range, they are formulated for different applications.

Traditional Gold Potting Compost contains perlite, a specialist base fertiliser and slow-release fertiliser and is designed for a wide range of ornamental, bedding and pot plants.

Traditional Gold Tub & Basket Compost is specifically formulated for ornamental plants grown in hanging baskets and tubs and contains Clover's water-holding polymer alongside slow-release fertiliser.

Choosing the formulation that best matches the intended application helps provide the most appropriate root-zone conditions for the plants being grown.

Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost 40L - Specialist Compost for Planting & Containers

£4.91

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost 40L is a specialist growing medium formulated for roses, trees, shrubs and other substantial garden plants. Suitable for both container growing and in-ground planting, it provides a supportive root environment for establishing plants and encouraging strong, healthy development.

Roses, trees and shrubs are longer-term plants, so successful establishment is particularly important. Creating suitable conditions around the root system helps newly planted specimens develop into the surrounding soil and establish the root structure required to support future growth.

Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost can be used when planting into the garden as well as for suitable plants grown in larger containers, making it a useful specialist compost for a wide range of permanent and semi-permanent planting projects.

Supplied in a convenient 40 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost?

Specialist planting compost - formulated for roses, trees and shrubs rather than general short-term planting.
Suitable for in-ground planting - useful when establishing new plants in beds, borders and landscaped areas.
Suitable for container growing - can be used for appropriate roses, trees and shrubs grown in sufficiently sized containers.
Supports root establishment - provides a suitable growing environment around newly planted root systems.
Ideal for roses - suitable for establishing roses in garden planting schemes and appropriate containers.
Suitable for trees - useful when planting suitable young trees and ornamental specimens.
Suitable for shrubs - a practical choice for new shrub borders and individual specimen planting.
Versatile landscaping compost - suitable for domestic gardens and professional planting projects.
Convenient 40L bag - easy to handle while providing useful volume for planting and container work.

What can Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost be used for?

This specialist compost is designed for larger, longer-lived plants and can be used across a range of garden and landscaping applications, including:

Planting roses
Planting ornamental shrubs
Establishing suitable young trees
New beds and borders
Landscape planting schemes
Large patio containers
Potting-on suitable woody plants
General planting of established garden plants

Plants with specialist soil or pH requirements should be matched with an appropriate growing medium. Acid-loving shrubs such as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, for example, are generally better suited to an ericaceous compost.

Planting roses, trees & shrubs in the garden

Good planting technique is just as important as the growing medium. Before planting, prepare an area wide enough to accommodate the root system comfortably and loosen surrounding soil where necessary.

Position the plant at the appropriate depth for the species and planting situation. Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost can then be incorporated with the excavated soil around the root system rather than creating a completely isolated pocket of compost.

Firm the backfilled soil and compost carefully around the roots to remove large air pockets, then water thoroughly after planting.

Newly planted trees and shrubs should be monitored particularly carefully during their establishment period. Their root systems have not yet spread extensively into the surrounding ground, so they can be vulnerable to dry conditions even when mature specimens nearby appear unaffected.

Supporting strong root establishment

The first stages after planting are critical for roses, trees and shrubs. The plant must begin producing new roots beyond its original root ball before it can make full use of moisture and nutrients within the surrounding soil.

A suitable planting compost helps create favourable conditions immediately around the developing root system while the plant establishes.

Maintaining appropriate moisture is particularly important during this period. Avoid allowing newly planted root balls to dry completely, but equally avoid keeping poorly drained ground permanently saturated.

Growing roses, trees & shrubs in containers

Many roses, compact trees and ornamental shrubs can be grown successfully in containers, provided the container is large enough for the developing root system and the chosen plant is suitable for container cultivation.

Use a container with adequate drainage and allow sufficient room for future root growth. Position the plant at the correct depth, fill carefully around the root ball with fresh compost and water thoroughly after planting.

Larger container plants rely entirely on the limited growing medium within the pot for water and nutrition, so irrigation and feeding should be monitored throughout the growing season.

As woody plants mature, they may require repotting into a larger container or other root-management work to maintain long-term plant health.

Specialist compost for roses

Roses are vigorous, long-lived plants capable of producing substantial annual growth and flowering. Establishing a healthy root system provides the foundation for this performance.

Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost is suitable for establishing roses in beds, borders and appropriate containers, providing a dedicated planting medium rather than relying solely on a general-purpose compost.

After establishment, roses should be managed according to their individual requirements for feeding, pruning, watering and general care.

Watering & aftercare after planting

Newly planted roses, trees and shrubs require regular monitoring while their roots establish. Water thoroughly after planting so that the soil and compost settle around the root system.

During dry weather, check the root zone rather than relying only on the appearance of the soil surface. A brief shower may wet the upper soil without supplying sufficient water to the deeper root ball.

Applying a suitable surface mulch around established planting can also help reduce moisture loss and suppress competing weeds. Keep mulch clear of direct contact with woody stems and tree trunks.

Planting compost vs multi-purpose compost

Multi-purpose compost is designed for versatility across a broad range of everyday gardening jobs. Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost is more specifically targeted towards larger and longer-lived plants being established in the ground or suitable containers.

This makes the specialist planting compost a logical choice for new rose beds, shrub borders, young trees and landscape planting where successful establishment is the priority.

About Clover

Clover manufactures growing media for both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Its range includes versatile everyday composts alongside specialist formulations developed for particular plants and growing applications.

Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost is designed specifically around the requirements of substantial, longer-term garden plants, providing customers with a more targeted alternative to a standard multi-purpose growing medium.

Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost FAQs

What is Clover Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost used for?

It is a specialist planting compost designed for establishing roses, trees, shrubs and other suitable substantial plants in garden soil or containers.

Can I use it when planting roses in the ground?

Yes. In-ground rose planting is one of the intended applications. Prepare the planting area properly and incorporate the planting compost with the surrounding soil around the root system.

Can this compost be used for trees?

Yes. It is suitable for establishing appropriate young trees and ornamental specimens. Correct planting depth, watering and any necessary staking remain important for successful establishment.

Can I grow shrubs in containers with this compost?

Yes, suitable shrubs can be grown in containers using this compost. Choose a sufficiently large pot with adequate drainage and monitor watering and feeding as the plant develops.

Is this suitable for rhododendrons and azaleas?

Acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas have specialist root-zone requirements and are generally better matched with Clover Ericaceous Compost.

Clover Ericaceous Compost 40L - Acid-Loving Plant Compost for Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Camellias

£4.89

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Ericaceous Compost 40L is a specialist growing medium formulated for lime-hating and acid-loving plants including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and heathers. Its carefully adjusted pH, essential plant nutrients, trace elements and incorporated wetting agent provide the specialised root environment these plants require for healthy growth.

Ericaceous plants have different root-zone requirements from many common garden plants. When grown in unsuitable alkaline conditions, their ability to access important nutrients can be restricted. Using a dedicated ericaceous compost provides a growing medium formulated specifically around these requirements.

Clover combines an appropriately adjusted acidic growing environment with essential nutrients, trace elements and a wetting agent, making this a practical choice for potting and growing a wide range of lime-sensitive ornamental plants.

Supplied in a convenient 40 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 100 x 40L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Ericaceous Compost?

Specialist ericaceous compost - formulated specifically for lime-hating and acid-loving plants.
Carefully adjusted pH - provides the acidic growing conditions required by ericaceous species.
Contains essential plant nutrients - supports healthy establishment and continued plant development.
Includes trace elements - provides important micronutrients as part of the specialist formulation.
Built-in wetting agent - helps water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium.
Ideal for rhododendrons - provides a root environment suited to these classic acid-loving shrubs.
Excellent for azaleas and camellias - suitable for maintaining healthy container-grown specimens and new planting.
Suitable for heathers - designed for lime-sensitive plants that require acidic growing conditions.
40L retail bag - a convenient size for pots, containers and seasonal planting projects.

Which plants need ericaceous compost?

Ericaceous compost is designed for plants that naturally prefer acidic growing conditions and do not perform well in lime-rich or alkaline media.

Clover specifically identifies its Ericaceous Compost as suitable for:

Rhododendrons
Azaleas
Camellias
Heathers
Other lime-hating and acid-loving species

If you are unsure whether a particular plant requires ericaceous compost, check its preferred soil conditions before planting rather than assuming that a standard multi-purpose compost will be suitable.

Why do acid-loving plants need specialist compost?

Soil and compost pH influences how readily plants can access particular nutrients. Acid-loving plants are adapted to lower-pH growing conditions and can struggle when planted into unsuitable alkaline soil or compost.

One of the most recognisable signs of unsuitable conditions in acid-loving plants is yellowing foliage while the leaf veins remain comparatively green. Although several factors can cause poor plant colour, high-pH conditions can restrict the availability of nutrients such as iron.

Clover Ericaceous Compost is therefore pH adjusted specifically for lime-hating plants, providing a more appropriate root-zone environment than conventional general-purpose compost.

Essential nutrients & trace elements

Clover's formulation contains both essential plant nutrients and trace elements. This is particularly important for ericaceous plants because their ability to take up certain nutrients is closely linked to the conditions surrounding their roots.

Using a correctly formulated ericaceous growing medium provides plants with a suitable foundation for establishment, foliage development, root growth and flowering.

Plants kept in containers for long periods may eventually require supplementary feeding. When additional nutrition is needed, choose a fertiliser specifically suitable for acid-loving or ericaceous plants and follow the manufacturer's application instructions.

Built-in wetting agent for moisture management

Clover Ericaceous Compost incorporates a wetting agent to help water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium.

This supports more consistent moisture around the root zone, particularly in container-grown plants where the roots are entirely dependent on the limited volume of compost within the pot.

The wetting agent does not eliminate the need for careful watering. Check compost moisture regularly and adjust irrigation according to plant size, container volume, weather and growing conditions. Containers should always have adequate drainage.

Growing ericaceous plants in pots & containers

Growing acid-loving plants in containers can be particularly useful where the natural garden soil is unsuitable. Rather than attempting to alter a large area of alkaline soil, the plant can be maintained in a container filled with an appropriate ericaceous growing medium.

Choose a container large enough for the developing root system and make sure it has adequate drainage. Position the plant at the appropriate depth, carefully fill around the root ball with fresh Clover Ericaceous Compost and water thoroughly after potting.

As the plant grows, monitor both moisture and nutrition. Long-lived shrubs may eventually need potting-on into a larger container or replacement of some of the existing growing medium.

Watering acid-loving plants

Maintaining the correct compost is only part of caring for lime-sensitive plants. Water quality can also matter, particularly for plants kept in containers for many years.

In hard-water areas, repeated watering with lime-rich tap water can gradually influence the growing conditions within a container. Rainwater is therefore commonly used for ericaceous container plants where practical.

Whatever water source is used, avoid allowing plants to remain permanently waterlogged. Aim for appropriate, consistent moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Ericaceous Compost vs Multi Purpose Compost

The important difference is the environment each compost is designed to provide.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is formulated as a versatile growing medium for a broad range of everyday plants and gardening applications.

Clover Ericaceous Compost is specifically pH adjusted for lime-hating plants and contains the nutrients, trace elements and wetting agent required as part of that specialist formulation.

For rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and other plants known to require acidic conditions, the dedicated ericaceous formulation is the appropriate choice.

Clover Ericaceous Compost 40L FAQs

What is ericaceous compost?

Ericaceous compost is a specialist growing medium formulated for lime-hating plants that prefer acidic root-zone conditions. Clover adjusts the compost pH specifically for these plants.

Which plants can I grow in Clover Ericaceous Compost?

Clover specifically recommends it for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and other lime-hating species.

Why can't I just use ordinary multi-purpose compost?

Acid-loving plants have different root-zone requirements. Clover Ericaceous Compost is specifically pH adjusted for lime-hating species, whereas standard multi-purpose compost is designed for a much broader range of plants.

Does Clover Ericaceous Compost contain nutrients?

Yes. The formulation contains essential plant nutrients together with trace elements required as part of a balanced specialist growing medium.

Does it contain a wetting agent?

Yes. Clover incorporates a wetting agent to help water penetrate and distribute through the compost more effectively.

Can I use ericaceous compost if my garden soil is alkaline?

Growing acid-loving plants in containers filled with ericaceous compost is a practical option where the natural garden soil is unsuitable. This gives greater control over the growing medium surrounding the roots.

Should I use rainwater for ericaceous plants?

Rainwater can be particularly useful for container-grown acid-loving plants in hard-water areas, where repeated use of lime-rich tap water may gradually influence growing conditions.

Why might the Clover bag I receive look different from the product image?

Clover is transitioning selected products to updated branded packaging. Either current packaging design may therefore be supplied during the changeover.

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost 25L - Fine Compost for Seed Sowing & Propagation

£4.91

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost 25L is a specialist propagation compost formulated to support healthy seed germination and vigorous root development in cuttings. Its fine-textured growing medium contains essential nutrients and is ideal for propagation trays, seedling modules and pots.

Seeds and newly taken cuttings have very different requirements from established plants. At this early stage, a suitable growing medium needs to provide close contact around developing roots while maintaining the moisture and air needed for successful establishment.

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost has been developed specifically for this purpose, providing a more appropriate propagation environment than using a general potting compost for every stage of plant growth.

Supplied in a convenient 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 120 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Seed & Cutting Compost?

Specialist propagation compost - formulated specifically for seeds and cuttings.
Supports healthy germination - provides a suitable environment for seeds during their earliest stage of development.
Encourages vigorous root development - particularly important when establishing cuttings and young seedlings.
Fine-textured growing medium - suitable for smaller seeds, young roots and propagation containers.
Contains essential nutrients - provides nutrition appropriate for establishing young plants.
Ideal for propagation trays - suitable for conventional seed trays and propagation systems.
Suitable for seedling modules - useful when raising individual seedlings before potting-on.
Suitable for pots - ideal for sowing or rooting individual plants in small containers.
25L bag - a practical volume for home propagation, nurseries and professional growers.

Designed for seeds, seedlings & cuttings

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost is intended for the propagation stage of plant production. Typical applications include:

Sowing flower seeds
Sowing vegetable seeds
Raising seedlings
Rooting suitable plant cuttings
Propagation trays
Seedling modules and cell trays
Small propagation pots

Germination and rooting requirements vary between species, so temperature, light, humidity, sowing depth and watering should always be adjusted to suit the particular plant being propagated.

Using Clover Compost for seed sowing

Fill clean trays, modules or pots with fresh Clover Seed & Cutting Compost and gently level the surface. Avoid excessively compressing the compost, as developing roots require both moisture and air within the growing medium.

Sow seeds at the depth recommended for the particular species. Very fine seeds may require little or no covering, while larger seeds are normally sown deeper.

After sowing, water carefully using a fine rose or another gentle method that will not wash seeds out of position. Maintain suitable moisture throughout germination without leaving the compost continuously saturated.

Using Clover Compost for plant cuttings

Successful cuttings need to develop a new root system before they can become independent plants. Clover Seed & Cutting Compost provides a fine growing environment in which suitable cuttings can establish their first roots.

Prepare cuttings using clean, suitable plant material and insert them carefully into the compost. Gently firm the growing medium around the base of each cutting so that there is good contact without excessive compaction.

Moisture and humidity should then be managed according to the species being propagated. Cuttings without an established root system can be particularly sensitive to both drying out and excessive saturation.

Why use a fine-textured propagation compost?

Seeds and newly developing roots are much smaller and more delicate than the established root systems found in mature plants.

A fine-textured compost helps provide close contact around seeds and young roots while creating a more consistent propagation environment within trays, modules and small pots.

This is particularly useful when working with smaller seeds or propagation cells where coarse material can occupy a significant proportion of the available rooting volume.

Watering seeds & cuttings

Moisture management is one of the most important parts of propagation. Seeds need sufficient moisture to begin germination, while cuttings require suitable moisture as they develop new roots.

Check the compost regularly and aim to maintain appropriate, even moisture rather than repeatedly allowing it to become extremely dry and then heavily saturating it.

Young plants can be sensitive to overwatering as well as drought, so trays and pots should have suitable drainage and should not be left permanently waterlogged.

When should seedlings be potted on?

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost is designed primarily for propagation and early establishment. As seedlings and rooted cuttings develop, their requirements change and they eventually need more space for continued root growth.

Once plants are sufficiently established to handle and have developed an appropriate root system, they can be transplanted into individual pots or larger modules containing a growing medium suited to their next stage of development.

Handle young plants carefully during transplanting and avoid unnecessary disturbance to delicate new roots.

Seed & Cutting Compost vs Multi Purpose Compost

Although multi-purpose compost can be used for many gardening jobs, Clover Seed & Cutting Compost is specifically formulated for propagation.

Its fine texture and nutrient balance are designed around germinating seeds and establishing cuttings, whereas multi-purpose compost is intended to cover a much broader range of planting and potting applications.

For gardeners or professional growers carrying out regular propagation, using a dedicated seed and cutting compost provides a growing medium matched more closely to this sensitive stage of plant development.

Seed & Cutting Compost vs John Innes Seed Compost

Clover offers both Seed & Cutting Compost and John Innes Seed Compost, but they are different products.

Clover Seed & Cutting Compost is a specialist fine-textured propagation growing medium intended for both seed germination and the rooting of cuttings.

Clover John Innes Seed Compost is a traditionally formulated John Innes compost specifically intended for seed sowing. The choice between them depends on the propagation method and the type of growing medium preferred.

Clover John Innes No.2 Compost 25L - Loam-Based Potting Compost for Established Plants

£5.36

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover John Innes No.2 Compost 25L is a traditionally formulated loam-based compost designed for potting-on established bedding plants and vegetable plants. Sitting between John Innes No.1 and the richer No.3 formulation, it provides the next stage of nutrition and support as young plants develop into stronger, more established specimens.

John Innes No.2 is particularly useful when plants have outgrown their initial pots and require more root space and greater nutritional support. Its soil-based character provides a substantial, stable growing medium for plants continuing their development in pots and containers.

Clover specifically recommends its John Innes No.2 for potting-on bedding plants and vegetable plants, making it a useful choice for gardeners, nurseries and professional growers following a staged potting programme.

Supplied in a convenient 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover John Innes No.2 Compost?

Traditional John Innes formulation - a recognised loam-based compost for established plants.
Designed for potting-on - ideal when plants are ready to move beyond their initial propagation or young-plant container.
Suitable for bedding plants - specifically recommended by Clover for established bedding plants.
Suitable for vegetable plants - provides a substantial medium for vegetables as they continue to develop.
Loam-based growing medium - provides useful body and stability in pots and containers.
Intermediate John Innes stage - bridges the gap between the lighter No.1 and richer No.3 formulations.
Ideal for established young plants - designed for plants with greater requirements than newly rooted or recently pricked-out subjects.
25L bag - a practical size for potting-on work at home or in professional plant production.

What is John Innes No.2 used for?

Clover describes John Innes No.2 as a traditionally formulated compost for potting-on bedding plants and vegetable plants.

It is intended for plants that are already established and have moved beyond their most delicate early stages. Typical applications include:

Potting-on established bedding plants
Potting-on vegetable plants
Moving young plants into larger pots
Intermediate-stage container growing
Nursery and greenhouse potting programmes
Established plants requiring more nutrition than a No.1 formulation provides

What does John Innes No.2 mean?

John Innes is not a manufacturer or brand. It refers to a traditional system of loam-based compost formulations developed for different stages of plant growth.

The numbered John Innes potting composts become progressively richer as the number increases. This allows the growing medium to be matched more closely to the development and nutritional requirements of the plant.

John Innes No.2 occupies the middle stage of the traditional No.1, No.2 and No.3 potting system. It is used once plants are sufficiently established to require more nutritional support than young plants but have not necessarily reached the final mature-plant stage associated with No.3.

John Innes No.1, No.2 & No.3 - what's the difference?

Clover offers the traditional John Innes range for different stages of plant development:

John Innes No.1	For sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and bedding plants.
John Innes No.2	For potting-on established bedding plants and vegetable plants.
John Innes No.3	For final potting of mature plants, including tomatoes, chrysanthemums, tubs, baskets and shrubs.

The progression allows growers to increase the strength of the growing medium as plants become larger and their nutritional requirements increase.

How to use Clover John Innes No.2 Compost

Choose a clean pot with adequate drainage that provides additional room for the developing root system. A modest increase in pot size is normally preferable to moving a relatively small plant directly into an excessively large container.

Add a layer of fresh Clover John Innes No.2 to the new pot before carefully removing the plant from its existing container. Handle the root ball gently and position the plant at approximately the same depth at which it was previously growing.

Fill around the root ball with fresh compost and gently firm it into place without excessive compaction. Water thoroughly after potting and allow surplus water to drain.

John Innes No.2 for bedding plants

Bedding plants often begin life in small propagation cells or pots before being moved through progressively larger container sizes. Clover John Innes No.2 is specifically intended for the potting-on stage of this process.

The loam-based growing medium provides additional body around the developing root system while the richer formulation supports continued plant development as specimens increase in size.

Once plants are established, continue to manage watering according to plant size, weather, container volume and growing conditions.

John Innes No.2 for vegetable plants

Clover also specifically recommends John Innes No.2 for potting-on vegetable plants.

It is useful where young vegetable plants have developed beyond the propagation stage and need additional rooting volume before reaching their final growing position or container.

Requirements vary significantly between crops. Vigorous fruiting vegetables may eventually require larger containers, a stronger growing medium or supplementary nutrition as they mature.

Why choose a loam-based compost?

Traditional John Innes composts are valued for their soil-based character. The inclusion of loam provides body and weight within the container, creating a substantial growing environment around established roots.

This additional weight can also improve pot stability compared with very lightweight growing media, particularly as plants develop larger canopies.

John Innes compost is therefore particularly useful for growers who prefer a traditional soil-based approach to pot and container growing.

Watering & feeding after potting-on

Water the plant thoroughly after potting and then allow moisture levels to dictate subsequent irrigation. Avoid watering purely to a fixed schedule, as requirements vary with plant species, pot size, temperature and growing conditions.

As plants continue growing, they will gradually use the nutrients available within the compost. Long-term container plants may therefore require supplementary feeding later in the growing cycle according to the requirements of the individual plant.

Always use an appropriate fertiliser and follow its recommended application instructions.

About Clover John Innes composts

Clover produces a traditional John Innes range covering different stages of plant development, from seed sowing through to the final potting of mature plants.

John Innes No.2 occupies an important middle position in this range, providing an established-plant compost specifically formulated for potting-on bedding and vegetable plants before they reach their final growing stage.

25L John Innes No.2 for nurseries & garden centres

The 25L bag is a practical format for gardeners potting-on individual plants as well as nurseries, garden centres and professional growers using traditional John Innes growing media.

Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal growing-media volume of 2,000 litres per pallet.

Clover John Innes No.1 Compost 25L - Loam-Based Compost for Young Plants & Seedlings

£5.36

Please sign in to see pricing

Clover John Innes No.1 Compost 25L is a traditionally formulated loam-based compost designed for sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and growing young bedding plants. It provides the first stage in the numbered John Innes potting range, offering young plants a structured growing medium with a nutrient level appropriate to early development.

Once seedlings have developed sufficiently to be handled, or rooted young plants are ready to move into individual pots, they need a growing medium that supports continued root and shoot development without the stronger nutrient levels intended for established plants.

Clover John Innes No.1 is formulated specifically for this stage. Its traditional loam-based composition gives the growing medium useful body and stability while providing an excellent transition between seed sowing and the later potting-on stages.

Supplied in a 25 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover John Innes No.1 Compost?

Traditional John Innes formulation - a recognised loam-based growing medium for young plants.
Designed for sensitive subjects - specifically formulated by Clover for plants at an early stage of development.
Ideal for pricking out seedlings - provides an appropriate next-stage compost after germination.
Suitable for bedding plants - ideal for young bedding plants being established before their next growing stage.
Suitable for rooted young plants - useful when moving established seedlings or rooted cuttings into individual pots.
Lower nutrient level - John Innes No.1 is the least nutrient-rich of the numbered No.1, No.2 and No.3 potting composts.
Loam-based structure - provides useful body and stability around developing root systems.
25L format - convenient for propagation work, nurseries and home gardeners.

What is John Innes No.1 used for?

Clover describes its John Innes No.1 as a traditionally formulated compost for sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and bedding plants.

Typical uses include:

Pricking out established seedlings
Potting-up young plants
Growing-on young bedding plants
Potting rooted cuttings
Moving plants from propagation trays into individual pots
Short-term potting before eventual planting out

It is particularly useful when a plant has progressed beyond germination but is not yet established enough to require the stronger nutrient levels found in John Innes No.2 or No.3.

What does John Innes No.1 mean?

John Innes refers to a traditional system of loam-based growing media formulated for different stages of plant development. The numbered potting composts use progressively higher nutrient levels as plants become larger and more established.

John Innes No.1 is the first of the numbered potting composts. It is designed for young plants, including seedlings that have reached the pricking-out stage and rooted cuttings ready for potting-up.

This makes it different from John Innes Seed Compost, which is specifically formulated for the earlier seed-sowing and germination stage.

Which Clover John Innes compost should I use?

John Innes Seed	Specifically formulated for seed sowing.
John Innes No.1	For sensitive subjects, pricking out seedlings and young bedding plants.
John Innes No.2	For potting-on established bedding plants and vegetable plants.
John Innes No.3	For final potting of mature plants, including tomatoes, chrysanthemums, tubs, baskets and shrubs.

Using the range progressively allows the nutrient strength and growing environment to be matched more closely to the plant's stage of development.

Ideal for pricking out seedlings

Pricking out is the process of moving young seedlings from their original seed tray or container once they are large enough to handle. This gives individual plants additional space for their roots and reduces competition as they develop.

Fill clean pots, modules or trays with Clover John Innes No.1 and level the compost without heavily compacting it. Carefully lift the seedling while disturbing its developing roots as little as possible.

Make a suitable planting hole, position the seedling and gently firm the compost around the roots. Water carefully after transplanting to settle the growing medium around the plant.

Potting-on rooted cuttings

John Innes No.1 can also be used when suitable cuttings have developed an established root system and are ready to move from their propagation medium into individual pots.

Choose a clean container appropriate to the size of the young root system. Position the rooted cutting carefully and fill around the roots with fresh compost, gently firming it into place.

Water after potting and allow excess moisture to drain. Young plants should then be kept under environmental conditions appropriate to the individual species while they establish in their new containers.

John Innes No.1 for young bedding plants

Bedding plants are specifically identified by Clover as an application for John Innes No.1. Young bedding plants are commonly moved through several container sizes as they develop, and No.1 provides a traditional growing medium for this early potting stage.

Once plants become larger and more established, they may be moved into a growing medium suited to their next stage, such as John Innes No.2, or planted into their final position where appropriate.

Watering young plants in John Innes No.1

Newly transplanted seedlings and young plants should be watered carefully after potting to settle the compost around the roots.

Thereafter, check the compost regularly and water according to the requirements of the plant rather than following a rigid schedule. Small pots can dry relatively quickly, while excessive watering can leave the root zone short of air.

Containers should have suitable drainage and should not be left permanently waterlogged.

About Clover John Innes composts

Clover produces a complete range of traditional John Innes growing media covering seed sowing and the progressive potting stages of plant development.

The No.1 formulation provides the first numbered potting stage, followed by No.2 for more established plants and No.3 for final potting and mature specimens. This makes it straightforward to select a traditional loam-based compost suited to the plant's current stage of growth.

25L John Innes No.1 for nurseries & garden centres

The 25L format is practical for home propagation while also providing a manageable retail bag for nurseries, garden centres and professional growers supplying traditional John Innes composts.

Creation Horticulture supplies 80 x 25L bags per full pallet, providing a total nominal growing-media volume of 2,000 litres per pallet.

Clover Bulb Compost 10L is a specialist growing medium specifically formulated for a wide range of indoor and outdoor container-grown bulbs. Ideal for seasonal bulb planting in pots and decorative containers, it provides a convenient ready-to-use compost for creating colourful displays throughout the garden and home.

Growing bulbs in containers makes it possible to create concentrated seasonal displays that can be positioned around patios, entrances, balconies and other areas where colour is wanted. Clover Bulb Compost provides a dedicated growing medium for this purpose rather than relying on a general-purpose compost.

The compact 10 litre bag is particularly convenient for planting individual pots and smaller bulb displays. Creation Horticulture supplies 250 x 10L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Bulb Compost?

Specialist bulb compost - specifically formulated for growing bulbs in containers.
Indoor and outdoor use - suitable for a wide range of container-grown bulbs in both settings.
Ideal for seasonal displays - perfect for creating spring and other seasonal flowering displays in pots.
Ready to use - a convenient dedicated growing medium for container bulb planting.
Suitable for popular flowering bulbs - ideal for container planting with bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
Perfect for pots and containers - designed specifically around container-grown bulb applications.
Convenient 10L size - easy to handle and well suited to smaller planting projects.

Specially formulated for container-grown bulbs

Clover identifies Bulb Compost as a high-quality compost specifically formulated for a wide range of indoor and outdoor container-grown bulbs.

It can be used when planting many popular ornamental bulbs into suitable pots and containers, including:

Tulips
Daffodils and narcissi
Hyacinths
Crocus
Alliums
Other suitable ornamental bulbs grown in containers

Always consider the requirements of the individual bulb variety, particularly planting depth, spacing, temperature and whether the bulb is intended for indoor or outdoor cultivation.

How to use Clover Bulb Compost

Select a suitable container with adequate drainage and partially fill it with fresh Clover Bulb Compost. Position the bulbs according to the recommended planting depth and spacing for the individual variety before filling around and above them with additional compost.

Gently firm the compost without heavily compacting it, then water after planting. Outdoor containers should be positioned according to the light and temperature requirements of the bulbs being grown.

Planting depth varies considerably between bulb species, so follow the instructions supplied with the bulbs rather than using one depth for every variety.

Growing bulbs in pots & containers

Container growing is an excellent way to make use of bulbs where permanent planting space is limited. Pots can also be moved into prominent positions as plants approach flowering, making it easier to create changing seasonal displays.

When selecting a container, allow sufficient depth for the chosen bulbs and their developing roots. Suitable drainage is important because bulbs generally perform poorly when left sitting in persistently saturated compost.

Containers exposed to rain should therefore have clear drainage holes, while indoor decorative pots should be managed carefully to prevent excess water accumulating around the bulbs.

Watering container-grown bulbs

Water after planting to settle the compost around the bulbs. Thereafter, moisture requirements will depend on the bulb species, container size, location, temperature and stage of growth.

The aim is generally to maintain appropriate moisture without leaving the compost continuously waterlogged. Outdoor pots can receive substantial natural rainfall during autumn and winter, so always check the compost before adding more water.

As active growth increases, particularly during warmer spring conditions, containers may require more frequent checking.

Create layered bulb displays

Larger containers can be planted with bulbs at different depths to create a succession of flowers from the same pot. This style of layered bulb planting is often used to combine varieties that flower at different points in the season.

When creating a layered display, choose compatible bulbs and position each type at an appropriate depth. Avoid simply applying the same planting depth to every variety.

The result can be a compact container display that provides successive periods of colour without requiring a large garden bed or border.

Indoor & outdoor bulb growing

Clover Bulb Compost is specifically formulated for both indoor and outdoor container-grown bulbs, giving it useful versatility for seasonal planting.

Outdoor applications include patio pots, entrance containers and balcony displays, while suitable bulbs can also be grown indoors in containers where their individual growing requirements can be provided.

Some bulbs sold for indoor flowering have particular temperature or preparation requirements, so always follow the instructions supplied with the bulbs themselves.

Convenient 10L bag for seasonal planting

Bulb planting is often a relatively small, seasonal job, making the 10 litre bag particularly practical. It provides a manageable amount of specialist compost without requiring customers to purchase a much larger bag of growing medium.

The smaller format is easy to carry and store and is particularly useful for customers planting a few patio pots, indoor containers or individual seasonal displays.

About Clover specialist composts

Clover manufactures a broad range of growing media for professional horticulture and the retail gardening market. Alongside its multi-purpose products, the range includes specialist composts designed around particular plants and growing applications.

Bulb Compost provides the dedicated option for customers planting bulbs in containers, complementing Clover's specialist media for propagation, ericaceous plants, tubs and baskets, roses, trees and shrubs, and traditional John Innes growing.

Clover Bulb Compost 10L FAQs

What is Clover Bulb Compost used for?

It is specifically formulated for growing a wide range of bulbs in indoor and outdoor containers.

Can I use Clover Bulb Compost for tulips?

Yes. Tulips are well suited to container growing. Always plant them at the depth and spacing recommended for the particular variety.

Is it suitable for daffodils and hyacinths?

Yes. Clover Bulb Compost can be used for suitable container-grown daffodils, narcissi, hyacinths and many other ornamental bulbs.

Can Clover Bulb Compost be used indoors?

Yes. Clover specifically describes the product as suitable for a wide range of both indoor and outdoor container-grown bulbs. Follow the individual bulb's requirements for indoor cultivation.

Does a bulb container need drainage holes?

Good drainage is important for most container-grown bulbs. Outdoor containers in particular should allow excess water to escape rather than leaving bulbs sitting in persistently saturated compost.

Can I plant different bulbs together in the same container?

Yes, compatible bulbs can be combined to create layered or successive displays. Each variety should still be planted at an appropriate depth and spacing.

Why choose specialist Bulb Compost instead of Multi Purpose Compost?

Clover Bulb Compost is specifically formulated for container-grown bulbs, whereas Multi Purpose Compost is designed as a general growing medium for a much broader range of applications.

How many Clover Bulb Compost 10L bags are supplied per pallet?

A full Creation Horticulture pallet contains 250 x 10L bags, providing a total nominal volume of 2,500 litres.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost 50L is a high-quality peat-based growing medium formulated for a wide range of everyday gardening applications. Enriched with essential plant nutrients and a built-in wetting agent, it provides a dependable root environment for seed sowing, potting, containers, hanging baskets and general plant growing.

Designed as a genuinely versatile compost, Clover Multi Purpose can be used throughout the gardening season for raising young plants, potting-on established plants and filling a wide range of containers. Its balanced formulation provides both nutrition and effective moisture management without requiring a different compost for every routine gardening job.

The incorporated wetting agent helps water penetrate and distribute through the growing medium, while the nutrient package supports plants during establishment and early growth.

Supplied in a convenient 50 litre bag, Creation Horticulture supplies 90 x 50L bags per full pallet.

Why choose Clover Multi Purpose Compost?

Versatile multi-purpose growing medium - suitable for numerous common gardening and container-growing applications.
Peat-based formulation - provides a consistent growing environment with good moisture-holding characteristics.
Contains essential plant nutrients - supports healthy establishment and early plant development.
Built-in wetting agent - helps water penetrate and distribute evenly throughout the compost.
Suitable for seed sowing - useful for raising many common flower and vegetable varieties.
Ideal for potting and potting-on - suitable for moving young and established plants into larger containers.
Suitable for hanging baskets - a versatile choice for seasonal flowering displays.
Ideal for pots and planters - suitable for a broad range of container-grown plants.
Convenient 50L bag - practical for both individual garden projects and regular seasonal use.

What can Clover Multi Purpose Compost be used for?

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to cover many of the most common growing jobs around the garden. Typical applications include:

Seed sowing
Raising seedlings
Potting and potting-on
Seasonal bedding plants
Pots and patio containers
Planters and window boxes
Hanging baskets
Suitable flowers and vegetables
General container gardening

Plants with specialist requirements may benefit from a dedicated growing medium. Acid-loving plants, for example, are better suited to an ericaceous compost formulated specifically for their preferred root-zone conditions.

Seed sowing & young plants

Clover Multi Purpose Compost can be used for sowing many common flower and vegetable seeds. Fill clean trays or pots with fresh compost and gently level the surface before sowing according to the requirements of the individual variety.

Water carefully after sowing to avoid displacing small seeds. Once seedlings are sufficiently developed to handle, they can be transplanted into suitable pots and grown on in fresh compost.

Different plant species have different germination requirements, so temperature, moisture, light and sowing depth should always be matched to the seed being grown.

Potting & potting-on

Multi-purpose compost is particularly useful when young plants have outgrown their existing containers or established plants need moving into larger pots.

Select a container with appropriate drainage and enough additional space for future root development. Add fresh Clover Multi Purpose Compost, position the plant at the correct depth and carefully fill around the root ball.

Gently firm the compost without heavily compacting it, then water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain.

Built-in wetting agent for improved water management

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains a wetting agent to help water penetrate the growing medium and distribute more effectively through the root zone.

This is particularly useful when compost begins to dry, as very dry growing media can sometimes become more difficult to re-wet evenly.

Watering frequency should still be adjusted according to plant size, container volume, temperature and weather conditions. Avoid maintaining the compost in a permanently saturated condition, as healthy roots require both moisture and air.

Nutrient enriched for healthy plant establishment

Clover Multi Purpose Compost contains essential nutrients to support plants as they establish and begin active growth.

The nutrients contained within any compost are gradually consumed by growing plants. For plants remaining in containers for extended periods, supplementary feeding can therefore be introduced when required using an appropriate plant fertiliser.

Feeding requirements vary significantly between plant species, growth stages and seasons, so always follow the instructions supplied with the chosen fertiliser.

Using Clover Multi Purpose Compost in hanging baskets

Clover Multi Purpose Compost can be used for hanging baskets and seasonal container displays, providing a versatile growing medium for many popular flowering plants.

Hanging baskets can dry rapidly because a relatively small volume of compost supports a large amount of plant growth. During warm or windy conditions, check moisture levels frequently and water according to the needs of the plants.

For particularly demanding ornamental displays, Clover also produces specialist Tub & Basket formulations designed specifically around the increased water and nutritional demands of this type of planting.

One compost for everyday growing

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed to provide a practical all-round solution for many common gardening jobs. Rather than requiring a different growing medium for every routine task, it can be used for:

Seed sowing
Potting and repotting
Patio pots and planters
Hanging baskets
Seasonal container displays
A wide range of suitable flowers, vegetables and ornamental plants

Specialist plants with particular growing-medium or pH requirements may require a dedicated compost instead.

Nutrients & wetting agent included

Clover Multi Purpose Compost combines plant nutrients with a built-in wetting agent. The wetting agent helps the growing medium accept water more readily, particularly if the surface has begun to dry between waterings.

This is useful in pots, planters and hanging baskets, where the relatively small volume of compost can experience rapid changes in moisture during warm or windy conditions.

Water according to the requirements of the individual plant rather than following a fixed timetable. Containers should have suitable drainage, and the compost should not be left continuously saturated.

Using Clover Multi Purpose Compost for seeds

Seed sowing is one of the recommended applications for Clover Multi Purpose Compost. Fill clean trays, modules or pots with fresh compost and gently level the surface without heavily compacting it.

Sow seeds at the depth recommended for the individual species and water carefully to avoid disturbing them. Germination requirements vary considerably between plants, so temperature, moisture and light should be managed according to the seed being raised.

For gardeners wanting a dedicated propagation medium, Clover also produces specialist Seed & Cutting Compost and traditional John Innes Seed Compost.

Potting & repotting plants

When repotting, choose a clean container with adequate drainage and sufficient space for the developing root system. Add fresh compost to the base, position the plant and fill carefully around the root ball.

Gently firm the compost without excessive compaction and water after potting to settle the growing medium around the roots. Allow excess water to drain freely.

Plants remaining in containers for extended periods may eventually require supplementary feeding as the nutrients available within the compost are used.

Why choose a 10L compost bag?

Not every gardening job requires a large bag of compost. The 10 litre size provides a convenient quantity for customers carrying out smaller planting and repotting jobs.

It is particularly useful for houseplants, balconies, patios, individual hanging baskets, small planters and customers with limited storage space.

Smaller bags are also easier to carry and handle, making the 10L format a practical retail option alongside Clover's larger growing-media packs.

Multi-purpose or specialist compost?

Clover Multi Purpose Compost is designed for versatility, making it an excellent choice for routine potting, seed sowing and container planting.

Some plants and applications benefit from a more specialised growing medium. Acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, for example, require an appropriate ericaceous compost. Clover also offers dedicated growing media for seeds and cuttings, tubs and baskets, roses, trees and shrubs, and traditional John Innes applications.

Choosing a specialist compost where necessary allows the growing medium to be matched more closely to the requirements of the plant.

About Clover Multi Purpose Compost

Clover produces growing media for both professional horticulture and the retail gardening market, with general-purpose and specialist formulations covering a wide range of growing applications.

Clover Multi Purpose Compost provides the versatile all-round option within the range, combining plant nutrition with an incorporated wetting agent for everyday seed sowing, potting and container growing.
