The TrolMaster MBS-PRO is a professional 4-in-1 environmental sensor combining air temperature, relative humidity, CO2 concentration and day/night light detection in a single unit for the Hydro-X Pro and Hydro-X Plus control systems.

By combining four important environmental measurements into one sensor, the MBS-PRO gives a compatible TrolMaster controller the real-time information required to manage temperature, humidity and CO2 equipment while automatically identifying whether the controlled area is in its light or dark period.

Unlike the MBS-TH used with the original Hydro-X HCS-1, the MBS-PRO incorporates a dedicated CO2 sensor and an onboard LCD display. Current environmental conditions can therefore be checked directly at the sensor as well as through the connected TrolMaster controller.

Multiple MBS-PRO sensors can be positioned throughout larger installations, allowing conditions to be measured at different locations rather than relying on a single environmental reading for the entire area.

Why choose the TrolMaster MBS-PRO?

  • 4-in-1 environmental monitoring - combines temperature, relative humidity, CO2 and day/night light detection.
  • Designed for Hydro-X Pro & Hydro-X Plus - developed specifically for TrolMaster's advanced HCS-2 and HCS-3 environmental controllers.
  • CO2 monitoring built in - continuously measures carbon dioxide concentration in PPM without requiring a separate environmental CO2 sensor.
  • Temperature monitoring - provides real-time air-temperature data for compatible heating and cooling control.
  • Humidity monitoring - provides relative-humidity information for compatible humidification and dehumidification equipment.
  • Day/night photocell - detects the presence of light so the controller can identify light and dark periods automatically.
  • Built-in LCD display - view current environmental readings directly at the sensor.
  • Multi-sensor capability - install sensors at different positions for more representative environmental monitoring.
  • Sensor averaging - compatible systems can use readings from multiple sensors together to provide averaged environmental data.

  • Water-resistant enclosure design - uses TrolMaster's updated injected enclosure for demanding controlled-environment applications.

Four environmental measurements from one sensor

The MBS-PRO combines several measurements that would otherwise require separate environmental sensors. Data is continuously sent to the connected Hydro-X Pro or Hydro-X Plus controller, where it can be used for environmental monitoring and equipment control.

Air temperature

Temperature information can be used by the controller to operate compatible heating, cooling, air-conditioning and ventilation equipment through the appropriate TrolMaster control modules.

Relative humidity

Continuous relative-humidity monitoring allows compatible humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation equipment to respond to changing moisture levels in the air.

CO2 concentration

The integrated CO2 sensor measures carbon dioxide concentration in parts per million (PPM). Compatible TrolMaster control equipment can use this information to manage CO2 supplementation and maintain configured CO2 parameters.

Day/night light detection

The built-in photocell detects whether light is present, allowing the controller to determine whether the environment is in its day or night period.

Day/night sensor, not a PAR meter

The MBS-PRO photocell detects the presence of light, not its intensity. This distinction is important when selecting sensors for a TrolMaster system.

The MBS-PRO tells the controller whether the lights are effectively on or off. It does not measure PAR, PPFD or Daily Light Integral.

For actual photosynthetic light measurement, the separate TrolMaster MBS-PAR Full Spectrum Quantum Sensor is required. Compatible Hydro-X Pro and Hydro-X Plus systems can use the MBS-PAR for advanced light-level and DLI monitoring and control.

Multi-point environmental monitoring

One of the major advantages of the MBS-PRO is its ability to form part of a multi-sensor installation. Environmental conditions can vary considerably across a larger controlled area, particularly around lighting, ventilation outlets, heating and cooling equipment.

Multiple MBS-PRO sensors can therefore be positioned at different locations to provide a better understanding of conditions throughout the environment.

Depending on the controller and configuration, sensor readings can be averaged together or individual sensors can be associated with specific control equipment. This allows the TrolMaster system to respond to conditions in a particular section rather than relying solely on one central reading.

Hydro-X Pro & Hydro-X Plus compatibility

Hydro-X Pro HCS-2 Compatible. The HCS-2 supports up to 50 sensors in combination across its compatible sensor types.
Hydro-X Plus HCS-3 Compatible. Up to 6 MBS-PRO sensors can be connected to one HCS-3 system.
Original Hydro-X HCS-1 Not the standard sensor for this controller. The HCS-1 uses the MBS-TH 3-in-1 sensor and separate MBS-S8 CO2 sensor.

A new Hydro-X Pro or Hydro-X Plus controller is supplied with an MBS-PRO as its primary environmental sensor. This separately supplied unit is therefore ideal for replacing an existing sensor or expanding a compatible system with additional environmental monitoring points.

Important SPH-1 power requirement

TrolMaster specifies that the MBS-PRO requires the SPH-1 Sensor Hub for supplemental power.

This is particularly important when designing or expanding a multi-sensor installation. The SPH-1 provides the additional power and connection capacity required by the MBS-PRO sensor network.

Sensor positioning

Position the MBS-PRO where it can provide a representative measurement of the environmental conditions experienced by the crop.

Avoid locations where readings could be disproportionately affected by direct heating, cooling outlets, humidifiers, dehumidifiers or concentrated CO2 discharge. When several MBS-PRO sensors are installed, positioning them across different sections of the controlled environment can provide more useful information about environmental variation.

The sensor's built-in LCD makes it particularly useful during installation and routine checks because conditions at each individual sensor location can be viewed directly without returning to the main controller.

TrolMaster MBS-PRO 4-in-1 Sensor FAQs

What does the TrolMaster MBS-PRO measure?

The MBS-PRO measures air temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration in PPM. It also contains a photocell that detects whether the controlled environment is in its light or dark period.

Which controllers use the MBS-PRO?

The MBS-PRO is designed for the TrolMaster Hydro-X Pro HCS-2 and Hydro-X Plus HCS-3 environmental control systems.

Does the MBS-PRO measure CO2?

Yes. Unlike the MBS-TH 3-in-1 sensor, the MBS-PRO includes an integrated CO2 sensor that measures carbon dioxide concentration in PPM.

Does the MBS-PRO measure PAR or PPFD?

No. Its photocell only detects the presence of light for day/night operation. PAR and PPFD measurement requires the separate TrolMaster MBS-PAR Full Spectrum Quantum Sensor.

Does the MBS-PRO have its own display?

Yes. The sensor has a built-in LCD that displays current conditions at the individual sensor location.

Can I use more than one MBS-PRO?

Yes. Multiple sensors can be positioned throughout a larger controlled environment to provide readings from different locations.

How many MBS-PRO sensors can the Hydro-X Plus use?

The Hydro-X Plus HCS-3 supports up to six MBS-PRO 4-in-1 sensors.

How many sensors can the Hydro-X Pro support?

The Hydro-X Pro HCS-2 supports up to 50 compatible sensors in combination, allowing MBS-PRO sensors to form part of a much larger sensor network.

Can readings from several sensors be averaged?

Yes. Compatible TrolMaster systems can use multiple environmental sensors together to provide averaged readings, helping provide a more representative measurement across a larger area.

Can an MBS-PRO control a specific environmental zone?

On compatible systems, individual sensors can be associated with specific control devices so equipment can respond to conditions measured in a particular section of the controlled environment.

Does the MBS-PRO directly switch heaters, fans or CO2 equipment?

No. The sensor provides environmental measurements to the controller. Compatible TrolMaster control modules then operate the connected heating, cooling, humidity, ventilation or CO2 equipment according to the controller settings.

Does the MBS-PRO require an SPH-1 Sensor Hub?

Yes. TrolMaster specifies that the MBS-PRO requires the SPH-1 for supplemental power.

Is an MBS-PRO already supplied with a new Hydro-X Plus?

Yes. A new Hydro-X Plus HCS-3 includes one MBS-PRO as its main environmental sensor. A separately purchased MBS-PRO can therefore be used as a replacement or to add another monitoring position.

What is the difference between the MBS-PRO and MBS-TH?

The MBS-TH is a 3-in-1 temperature, humidity and day/night sensor designed for the original Hydro-X HCS-1. The MBS-PRO adds integrated CO2 measurement and a local LCD display and is designed for the Hydro-X Pro and Hydro-X Plus.

Why use multiple environmental sensors?

Temperature, humidity and CO2 can vary across a larger controlled environment. Using multiple sensors allows conditions to be monitored at several locations and can provide more representative data or enable localised environmental control.
